New York (JTA) — Many American Jews feel uneasy about Fundamentalist Chris- tians but have not examined the negative assumptions on which this "angst" is based, according to Nathan Perlmutter, national director of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith (ADL). In an article prepared for pub- lication in the December issue of The Reconstructionist, Perlmut- ter stressed the need to set the record straight on these assump- tions, particularly in view of the Fundamentalists' long record of friendship for Israel. Asserting that it is time for Jews and Fundamentalists to begin a "meaningful dialogue," Perlmutter focused on erroneous beliefs many Jews hold about Fundamentalists. One of them, he said is that Fundamentalism is "inextricably interwoven into the fabric of the American right and thinks, feels and votes the same ultraconservative way about all social and political is- sues." Ruling Backs Beth Din New York (JTA) — A New York resident, involved in a Jewish divorce proceeding with a rabbinical court (Beth Din), had his damage suite for $1 mil- lion against the Beth Din thrown out by the Kings County Supreme Court, in the first such legal action ever taken, accord- ing to the National Jewish Commission on Law and Public Affairs (COLPA). Dennis Rapp, COLPA execu- tive director, said the husband had refused to give his wife a "get" (Jewish divorce) and the Beth Din summoned him to a hearing. The husband's name was withheld. Rapp said the husband, who has since given his wife a "get," charged in his civil suit that the Beth Din had invaded his pri- vacy and also damaged his repu- tation by publishing information concerning his "marital rela- tionship which appeared in sev- eral newspapers." New York (JTA) — The American Jewish Congress hailed last week's passage by the House of Representatives of legislation that would require colleges and universities receiv- ing federal aid to disclose siza- ble gifts from foreign donors. The legislation, introduced by Rep. Robert T. Matsui (D-Calif.), and based upon a proposal drafted by AJCongress attor- neys, is designed to discourage intrusions on academic freedom by foreign sources that attempt to tie political or propaganda strings to such gifts or obtain exclusive rights to university research findings.
