MK Suspension
Is Demanded
Jerusalem (JTA) — Voices in
the alignment, and in the left in
general, demanded suspension of
the appointment of Likud Knes-
seter Michael Dekel as deputy
defense minister, following
police suspicion that two of his
former aides, when he served as
deputy agriculture minister,
were involved in the alleged
West Bank land fraud.
Those demands were made,
after the Likud's assertion that
the police investigation into the
affair was politically motivated.
Spokesmen for the Likud
explicitly accused police minis-
ter Haim Bar-Lev, of directing
the investigation for political
reasons.
Deputy Premier Yitzhak
Shamir expressed surprise at
the investigation. "I see some
exaggerated industriousness,
and I believe it is motivated by
political considerations," Shamir
said.
Dekel himself refused to react
to insinuations that he, too,
might be involved in the land
affair. However, in reference to
allegations that of his former
aides, Avi Tzur, now a spokes-
man for the airports authority,
took money for the Likud, Dekel
said that by law, one could raise
money — up to a certain limit
— for political purposes. "All
the parties are doing it, and so
did the Likud," he said.
In Tel Aviv, a public opinion
poll published in Maariv shows
that the Likud has gained
strength from 24 seats in the
120-member Knesset in an
August poll to 32 seats in the
poll by the Modi'in Ezrachi pub-
lic opinion research institute be-
tween Nov. 12-22.
Labor also rose, from 51 in
August to 53 in November.
The Likud increase was by 33
percent, considerably higher
than Labor's three percent rise.
Shulamit Aloni's Ratz (Citi-
zens Rights Movement) dropped
from seven seats in the August
poll to five last month, while
Meir Kahane's Kach Party
dropped from seven to five.
The other parties remained
stable, as did the overall bal-
ance of forces between the par-
ties of the right, the left and the
religious parties.
Meanwhile, the newly formed
Liberal Center Party led by Tel
Aviv Mayor Shlomo Lahat and.
Jewish Agency Chairman Leon
Dulzin, has issued its political
platform demonstrating a basi-
cally moderate line on foreign
pohcy.
The party announced that it
was opposed to annexation of
the administered areas, and was
opposed to a "binational state"
which would result from such
annexation. Israel, the party de-
clared, must be a Jewish and
Zionist state.
While Israel had an historic
right over the territories, it
should be prepared to give up
territories for peace. Jerusalem,
however, is not a matter for
negotiation, the party pro-
claimed. The party also rejects
out of hand the creation of an
independent Palestinian state
between Israel and Jordan.
