Mazer, his old roomie, said Friedman as a freshman was made steward of his dorm to earn room and board. "But he had extravagant tastes," Mazer said, "and he served steak al- most every meal. The budget couldn't take it and so we made him 'honorary steward'." Shapiro said he felt "some- what inadequate" to accept the Hall honor in Friedman's behalf. Friedman's widow was unable to attend. She lives in New York. "Benny Friedman was an out- standing example of how some- one with great athletic skill can enrich our lives and our memories," Shapiro said. Oscar Feldman, before intro- ! ducing David Stern, spoke of the time in 1974 when he advised Davidson about purchasing the Pistons from Fred Zollner. "I told him purchasing the Pistons was foolhardy," Feldman said candidly, but with a chuckle. "... He had the intestinal for- titude to see the franchise through a successful tur- naround." The Pistons, which never made money before Davidson and his partners took over in 1974, has become one of the most successful teams — finan- cially and otherwise — in the NBA. Last year the Pistons led the league in attendance. Stern said Davidson, who sits on a number of NBA commit- tees, "has made my life ... very easy" through his leadership and guidance in major decisions over the last three years. "Bill, thanks for not following Oscar's advice," Stern said. Davidson, a native Detroiter, is a business graduate of U-M who earned a juris doctorate from Wayne State. He gave up law practice to take over the bankrupt Frank W. Kerr wholesale drug company and 7 within three years paid off its debts. He took over a surgical supply company and turned that around, then a struggling family business, the Guardian Glass Company, and made that a big success and the flagship of his business interests. But his pride and joy is the Pistons. "I love sports," he told the dinner audience. "I've always enjoyed competition. How com- petitive was I? I used to cheat at tiddlywinks." He said he was not only proud of his basketball franchise, "but I'm really in love with all the people in our organization." Each inductee received a per- sonal plaque. Four large bronze plaques outlining their achievements already have been installed at the main Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield, along with a plaque listing all the Hall "Founders" — those persons contributing $1,000 or more. The goal is 100 Founders, officials said, with funds used to send Michigan athletes to the Maccabiah Games in Israel every four years and to establish various projects at the Center. Among them are a teen-age nightclub, an 18-hole miniature golf course inside the tennis bubble and a youth ac- tivities center, Foon said. Al Ackerman, sports director of WDIV-TV in Detroit, was the toastmaster at the MJSHF dinner. He is the secretary of the association. Bob Steinberg, a vice president, was dinner chairman, and David Hermelin the co-chairman. Doris August, assistant executive director, coordinated the dinner. Patrons also received a 48-page souvenir book and a Tiger Yearbook. Other Hall officials are vice presidents William Jacobs and Myron Milgrom, Treasurer Seymour Brode, Executive Di- rector Milton Fishman, and Leon Schurgin, legal counsel. The organization has a 35- member board of advisers. Vince Doyle, WWJ Radio sports director, wrapped up the evening with some brief com- ments. Said Doyle, "What moti- vated these men? Money? No. For all it was the love of the game." •Round trip Air Flight • Marco Polo Resort Hotel Frio • Breakfast Every Day S i •4 Dinners • City Tour M. •Variety Shows •All Transfers • Much More 1550 • PROFESSIONAL PORTRAIT LIGHTING CATS THEATRE WEEKEND 352 7030 LEO KNIGHT IN TORONTO The annual meeting of the Jewish Home for Aged will take place on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Blumberg Plaza and Fleischman Residence of the Jewish Home for Aged.
