"The thing I remember most," Newman told the banquet crowd, "is that they said I was a pretty smart quarterback. I held the record for most carries in a game in pro ball, 38 or 39. A few years ago O.J. (Simpson) broke it. A little later I ran into Don Meredith. He said, 'I thought you were supposed to be a smart quarterback?' " Running with the ball so many times wasn't too smart for a quarter- back, Newman suggested. "I was lucky to be born when I was because I don't know if I could have played with the guys today, as big as they are," said Newman, who was a 5-foot-10, 180-pound player. He called his induction into the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame "an honor I don't deserve. Football is a team game and I wish members of the team I played with could be here with me." The 76-year-old Newman, who ran an auto dealership in De- nver for a year after leaving De- troit in 1965, retired to Florida in 1966 and moved to Pompano Beach in 1971. Friedman would be 81 were he alive. He died in New York City on Nov. 23, 1982. He was an All-American in 1925 and 1926, the front end of the famous Benny-to-Bennie passing combination. The other Bennie was Oosterbaan. Friedman was the Western Conference (Big Teri) MVP in 1926. He starred for several years in the NFL with four teams and was all-pro four times. He was inducted into the National Football Founda- tion Hall of Fame. Both he and Greenberg are members of the MIAMI'S KOSHER SHOWPLACE Kosher Travel Plan .
