New York — A multi-national
anti-terrorist commando unit
and an international convention
against terrorism, including
mandatory extradition, were ad-
vocated last week by a panel of
counter terrorism experts at an
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith news conference.
Dr. Yonah Alexander, profes-
sor and director of the Institute
for Studies in International Ter-
rorism at the State University
of New York, warned that in
1986 there could be "escalation"
of terrorist incidents, such as
the Achille Lauro hijacking, and
added that "nuclear terrorism"
may be around the corner." he
emphasized that "Americans are
the number one target."

Jerusalem — Israel's southern
port city of Ashdod is being be-
sieged. But the residents of the
city need not fear for they are
being surrounded by the Jewish
National Fund, who far from
posing any threat, intend to im-
prove the areas quality of life by
planting and developing a green
belt of parks and leisure
facilities around Ashdod.
The green belt is to be named
Ashdod Park, and it will, when
completed, encircle the city from
the north, east and south (to the
west Ashdod is bordered by the
Mediterranean coastline). The
park will provide the city's resi-
dents with the recreational op-
portunities, and most impor-
tantly improve municipal pride
in a city known for its flourish-
ing industry but lacking natural
charm.
Located 20 miles south of Tel
Aviv, Ashdod today has a popu-
lation of 120,000. Built on sand
dunes during the 1950s Ashdod
has the country's second largest
port and is a model of modern
urban planning. The city is
criss-crossed by handsome wide
boulevards and is replete with
shopping malls, parks and cul-
tural amenities. Ample industry
has also sprung up in the town
including chemical industries,
refineries, power stations and
military industries.
However, while this has pro-
vided occupational opportunities
for Ashdod's citizens, the city
has developed an image of unat-
tractive chimneys belching out
smoke.
