A symposium for Great Lakes women's organizations will be held April 18-20 on "The Threat of Nuclear War and Global Security." Honorary chairpersons will include Paula Blanchard, Barbara Levin and Lori Riegle. The underlying question be- hind the 20 years of programs and symposiums the Center has been involved with is, "How much good has it done?" Saperstein said it would be im- possible to point to specific gov- ernment actions that have been the direct result of one particular peace group. However, the peace movement awl whole has created considerable change. "They wouldn't (have gone to) Geneva if it wasn't for the peace movement," he explained. "There would still be the 'Evil Empire' business." So, the Center is fulfilling its purpose as an "analysis and teaching center." If the Center were to concern itself with any- thing but the facts, he said, "it would lose its academic credibil- ity." "It's a place to educate children and adults about the facts of the matter," Feinstein said. As the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies continues to ma- ture, so, its supporters hope, will the academic community and the general community. The goal, Genser said, is to eventually wipe out "the geographic and political illiteracy of many Americans." The Center's leaders believe that only after the facts are ab- sorbed about the way the world really is, and not merely how we would like it to be, can people sit down and talk about how the world can be changed. ❑ Knesset Moves To Ban Pork Jerusalem (JTA) — A bill banning the sale of pork in pre- dominently Jewish areas of Is- rael passed its first reading in the Knesset last week by a 42-22 vote. Likud and Tehiya joined the religious parties to push the measure through. Most Laborites and leftist parties were opposed. Meanwhile, a bill to de- criminalize homosexual acts was introduced in the Knesset last Monday. Its sponsors, Shulamit Aloni and Yossi Sarid of the Civil Rights Movement (CRM), argued that such acts between consenting adults in privacy have no place in the Criminal Code. In practice, they have rarely been prosecuted.
