THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 13, 1985 YOUR MOTHER LIVES ALONE .. . SHE SHOULD HAVE A SECURITY SYSTEM MEDICAL, POLICE, FIRE — HELP IS ON ITS WAY Tale HAIR FASHIONS 29525 W. NINE MILE Farmington Hills, Michigan in which the Center wanted to see change is where perceptions and attitudes are first learned and ex- perimented with: the §chools. "What should be taught in the schools?" Feinstein asked. "Those were the days when in the public schools, people would have nu- clear bomb tests . . . They were getting kids to jump under their desks and that's how they're going to survive nuclear war. So you think you're protected. "I was born in Vienna and I saw the behavior when the Nazis came in . . . many people were diving under desks. They thought it would go away and that the Nazis would never do what they ended up doing." Feinstein said the Center was created in an effort to legitimize the peace movement and its con- cern over issues such as the arms race. As the Center evolved, it began to take up other issues, ranging from relations with China to an all-day seminar on the Holocaust with mostly non-Jewish high school students. The Center's co-major program, which combines peace and conflict studies with other areas of inter- est, such as history and political science, currently has 25 stu- . dents enrolled. Course subjects range from broad overviews and philosophies of peace and con- flict, to the grim facts of nuclear war. Genser said she considers the concepts of the Holocaust and nu- clear war to be closely related. "It (the Holocaust) made possible the (systematic) extermination of human beings." She said nuclear war, if something is not done now to prevent it, is the next logical step after the Holocaust. Genser, and other representa- tives from the Center, go to differ- ent schools in the community to hold study days and bring in ex- perts on nuclear war. "The whole school is involved in trying to understand this huge phenom- enon and what students them- selves think about it and what they can do about it." Hopefully, she said, the stu- dents walk away with the knowl- edge of how complex conflict can be and how it is rarely just a two- sided "black and white" issue. In addition to its programs in elementary and secondary schools, the Center brings many speakers to WSU to address criti- cal international topics. Recently, for its 20th anniversary celebra- tion, the Center brought in former State Department spokesman Hodding Carter to speak on ter- rorism and the media. It also offers a co-major in Peace and Conflict Studies for WSU stu- dents. "In this day and age, the study of conflict resolution and the voca- tion of peace-making ought to be priorities of all students," said Cheryl Pijanowski, a WSU senior who is working on her co-major. Future Center projects will in- clude an art and essay ehibit by elementary and secondary stu- dents, on "The World WelWant to Live In: A World of Peace land Jus- Continued on next page DISPATCH SECURITY (313) 389-1646 476-9544 476-9522 Family Hair Care PATRICK NAGEL "CN-7" An Original Serigraph.
