Does Talmud
Mention Comet?

C=

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Halley's
Comet, now making its once-
in-a-lifetime appearance, may
not have been discovered by
British astronomer Edmund
Halley after all, according to
Rabbi Zvi Ilani, of Bar-Ilan
University.
A comet which appears every
70 is mentioned in the Talmud,
the rabbi said during a recent 1
Israel radio program about the
comet.
According to Rabbi Ilani, the
Talmud's Seder Nezikin, section
Horayoth, page (DAF) 11 says
that Rabban Gamliel, on a jour-
ney to Rome in the year 95, was
accompanied by Rabbi Yehoshua
Ben Hananya, sailing in a ship
which was beset by storms and
went off course owing to faulty
navigation.
Gamliel had taken only bread
with him, but Rabbi- Yehoshua
had also taken a reserve supply
of flour, which he shared with
his companion when Gamliel's
bread ran out because of the de-
lays.
"Did you know that we should
be so much delayed that you
brought flour with you," the
Talmud quoted Gamliel as ask-
ing.
Yehoshua replied: "A certain
star rises once in 70 years and
leads the sailors astray, and I
suspected it might rise and lead
us astray."

Romania Jews
Treated Well'

New York — The Jewish
community of Romania is faring
well, its synagogues and schools L\
functioning freely without gov-
ernmental restrictions, accord-
ing to Romanian Chief Rabbi
Moses Rosen.
Rabbi Rosen, appearing at a
press conference sponsored by
the American Jewish Committee
in New York last week, pointed
out that Romania's foreign pol-
icy has in recent years shown a
certain degree of independence
from the Soviet Union. He cre-
dited the comparatively favora-
ble situation of Romanian Jews
to their avoidance of outright
confrontations or violent demon-
strations against the goverri-
ment. . •
Romania's status with the
United States government as a
"Most Favored Nation" for the
purposes of trade is linked to
the communist country's stand c'
on human rights issues. The
MFN status is due to be re-
viewed by the Senate in the
near future.

iated national medical center.
