THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 13, 1985 23 ...............****** NEWS Law Of Return Split Widens ) Jerusalem (JTA) — The sharp differences in the American Jewish community over a pro- posed amendment to the Law of Return erupted in Jerusalem last week as American Jewish religious leaders and heads of Jewish organizations took time out from the deliberations of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organ- izations to state their cases in two separate press conferences. The Conservative and Reform \leaders who oppose the change, 'called on the leaders of Israel "to reject the demand for a change in the Law of Return." In a statement signed by 17 leaders of Reform and Conserva- tive affiliation, they said: "The self-serving demands of one group of Jews that they be recognized as the sole interpret- ers of the Jewish religion — and specifically that their authority to determine the legitimacy of conversions performed outside Israel be spelled out in the secu- lar Law of Israel — is morally and religiously unacceptable to us. It is contrary to the interests and welfare of world Jewry. The proposed change in the Law of Return will do harm to the prin- ciple of Jewish unity and i jeopardize the sense of solidarity that binds the Jewish people everywhere to the State of Is- rael." At a separate press confer- ence, leaders of six Orthodox Jewish groups declared in a joint statement that they reject the recent proposal of Prime Minister Shimon Peres to freeze the issue of "Who is a Jew" for a \_ period of ten years, and not to bring it to a vote in the Knesset. ♦ 9 out of 10 Nathan Donation New York (JTA) — Israeli peace activist and philanthropist Abie Nathan donated $7,000 to St. Patrick's *Cathedral last week after he viewed media re- ports on a robbery there last weekend.
