Novel Request
New York — Steven Kustin's
bar mitzvah request has re-
sulted in close to 1,000 trees
planted in memory of his
mother. The trees were planted
in Israel through the Jewish
National Fund.
As his bar mitzvah ap-
proached earlier this year, the
New York teenager remembered
his visit to Israel with his fam-
ily five years before and the ex-
citement he felt when he
planted a tree at a JNF forest
site.
Steven was not able to return
to Israel to plant trees at the
time of his bar mitzvah, but he
did the next best thing. At his
father's suggestion, Steven's bar
mitzvah invitation included an
unusual addition to the
standard text: "Steven requests
that gifts be sent to the JNF for
trees to be planted in Israel in
memory of his mother, Ellen
Gail Kustin."
The JNF tree certificates are
still being issued, and trees con-
tinue to be planted in Israel as a
memorial to Steven's mother.
PLO Street
For Klinghoffer
New York — Ernest Zelig,
president of B'nai Zion, the
Jewish fraternal organizatio,
has asked Mayor Edward I.
Koch and the New York City
Council to rename the Manhat-
tan street on which the PLO's
U.S. headquarters is situated,
"Leon Klinghoffer Square."
"It is ftting that East 65th
Street between Park and
Lexington Avenues be renamed
in honor of the innocent and
courageous New Yorker who
died as a result of PLO ter-
rorism," Zelig stated.

NEWS
New York (JTA) — An
Orthodox-oriented Jewish legal
aid agency here has received
hundreds of telephne calls, most
of them from the New York City
area, from Jewish and non-
Jewish Sabbath observers whose
employers had indicated to them
they would no longer accommo-
date their Sabbath time off re-
quests.
Dennis Rapps, executive di-
rector of the National Jewish
Commission on Law and Public
Affairs kCOLPA), said such em-
ployers had misinterpreted a re-
cent. Supreme Court. decision
outlawing a Connecticut state
law requiring employers to
grant religious time off, without
exceptions, to observant em-
ployes.
The development led the fed-
eral Equal Employment. Oppor-
tunity Commission (EEOC) to
make a policy statement reaf-
firming the rights of Sabbath
needs by their employers. The
EEOC statement declared that
the Supreme Court decision in
the Connecticut case did not af-
fect protection for Sabbath ob-
servers.
