who need our care, our concern,
our very existence? People
sometimes speak of a person
who suffers from a mental dis-
ease as being not "all there." It
is a strange expression, but an
insightful one. For true sanity,
authentic human dignity might
be defined positively as the
quality of being fully present in
any situation into which one
may be drawn. I am must fully
human when I am "all there."
But to be really present has a
cost. It requires complete in-
volvement and total commit-
ment.
Jacob gave that commitment
to his son, Joseph. Con-
sequently, Joseph could draw
strength from the values of his
father. The question that each of
us should consider is: Am I pre-
sent to my spouse, my family,
my friends, my people? This is
not easy to attain. A sustained
closeness between husband and
wife is becoming more and more

difficult to achieve, as well as a
sense of intimacy and sharing
with friends, and with others
who come within the scope of
our most valued relationships.
Are we present to the Jewish
community? When I observe the
sparsely attended meetings on
behalf of the needs of the Jewish
people and of Israel and of our
community, I often experience a
sense of sorrow and frustration.
There are certain faces that one
sees and that one does not see.
Our Jewish community is based
on voluntary participation.
There are no coercive forces that
require us to be Jewish, that
demand our assumption of
Jewish responsibility. In such a
voluntary society, organizations
and leaders are powerless, with-
out the involvement, respon-
siveness, and presence of those
whom they represent. We need
the presence of more of our fel-
low Jews in shaping the quality
of Jewish life in our community.
