tive leadership who do not rec-
ognize Reform converts and who
have rejected "Patrilineal Des-
cent" outright?!
Jews in American com-
munities (and Detroit is a par-
ticularly outstanding example)
have always considered them-
selves one unified entity —
anachnu echad — regardless of
variant levels of observance or
congregational affiliation.
Schindler wants to change all
this; he desires to rip apart the
peaceful fabric of our commu-
nity. And he has been suc-
cessful. Is your readership
aware that in the High Holy
Day season just past, the unity-
spirit of Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur was defiled by veh-
ement attacks from the pulpit
against traditional Judaism in
temples from coast to coast?
Rabbi Schindler is trying to
create, out of thin air, a
xenophobic image of observant
Jews as a new "Jewish Race" —
"The Orthodox," against whom
he whips up frenzied public hys-
teria, in an attempt to cover up
internal problems within his
own bailiwick, (a technique also
espoused by shaky dictatorships
since time immemorial).
Witness his pathetic postur-
ing, ". . a waning influence
which the Orthodox establish-
ment must know and fear." Oh
now well does Rabbi Schindler
himself know the real truth.

that the influence of observant
Jewry within the overall coin-)
munity has never been stronger;i
and grows apace.
Finally: If Schindler's con-
temptible comparison of obse - /
vant Jews with Nazis (yemack
sh'mam) had been mouthed by
an Iowa farmer, the Anti-
Defamation League would have; ,
swiftly condemned such anti-
Semitism, and moved to silence
it.
I call on the Jewish Comm ; '
nity Council and the ADL to act
with no less alacrity in thisj,
case, and to issue an immediat&
and unequivocal condemnatioC
of the dangerous rantings of this
evil racist.

Rabbi Yitschak M. Kagan/

Lubavitch And
Ethiopian Jews

The ZINS news release cap;
tioned, "Chabad Rejects Ethio-,
pians," (Nov. 29) is false on two,'
counts:
1. Chabad schools througho,
Israel have many Ethiopian,
pupils who have studied ther
for years.
2. Chabad takes no stani'a
whatever in rabbinic disputes.;
over the Ethiopian issue. The
schools abide by rabbinic deci-J,
sions enacted by the appropriate
authorities in the Holy Land.
