what we have is to do something
for someone who doesn't have it
quite so good.
"That way, our accom-
plishments will taste so much
sweeter."
However, the native of up-
state New York said that while
charity is important, you can't
force it down people's throats.
Everybody has to do what is
right for them."
In keeping with his personal
philosophy, Slonim makes sure
the promotions are run in good
taste and on a modest scale. The
52-year-old Great Scott man-
ager, who ran grocery stores in
New York, Wisconsin and II-
lionis before coming to Michigan
eight years ago, doesn't push his
charitable projects on colleagues
at other stores in the Allied
Supermarket chain.
Slonim has gained a reputa-
tion among area grocery shop-
pers with his personable manner
and zany P.A. announcements
("Huey, Dewey and Louie!
Please report to the stock
room"). But for 52 Southfield
families, it was his compassion
rather than his sense of humor
that stood out last week.
