Likud Must
Agree To
Conference,
Arens Warns
Washington, (JTA) — Li-
kud Cabinet Minister Moshe
Arens warned last week that
Israeli Prime Minister Shi-
mon Peres cannot agree to an
international conference for
Middle East peace talks as
long as Likud is opposed.
Israel's national unity
government "cannot go into
an international conference
unless both Likud and Labor
agree to it," Arens said in an
interview here. "Peres cannot
do it on his own."
Arens, a Minister-Without-
Portfolio, also warned that if
the national unity govern-
ment fell apart it would be
the "end" of Israel's econom-
ic plan which he said has been
achieving "some results."
Arens, who was Ambassa-
dor to the United States and
Defense Minister under the
former Likud government, is
in the U.S. for speaking en-
gagements. He has been meet-
ing with some U.S. officials
while in Washington and met
with Deputy Secretary of
State John Whitehead.
On the demand of King
Hussein of Jordan for an in-
ternational conference, Arens
said Likud would support
Peres' original statement
that he would accept a Unit-
ed Nations Security council
resolution endorsing- direct
negotiations between Israel
and Jordan. But Arens said
Peres has moved away from
this position and is now wil-
ling to accept an interna-
tional conference.
Dig Uncovers
Gold Hoard
Tel Aviv, (JTA) — An an-
cient synagogue collection
box containing some 500
coins, half of them old and
the rest bronze hidden for
well over 1,000 years was un-
covered recently during an
archaeological dig of the an-
cient settlement of Merot in
eastern Galilee.
Archaeologists, who have
kept the find secret for many
months until completion of
the current dig and removal
of the coins for exhibition in
a museum, declined to put a
value on the unique find. The
gold hoard was found in a col-
lection box carved in the floor
of a storeroom attached to
the side of the synagogue.
The hole was plugged by a
close-fitting stone which ap-
parently saved the collection
from being plundered through-
out the ages.
The synagogue had appar-
ently been damaged several
times by earthquakes, which
presumably led to abandon-
ment of the town and its
place of worship.
