Ten fourth grade children
from the Jewish Parents Insti-
tute (JPI) will perform a
Chanukah play at the main
Jewish Community Center
(JCC) at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in
the Center's Shiffman Hall.

Salzmann will speak and pre-
sent a photographic and film
documentation on the Jews of
Turkey at 8 p.m. today at a by-
invitation-only gathering in the
home of Morry and Beverly
Baker, 2200 Cameo Lake Dr.,
Bloomfield Hills. He also will
sell his photographs. Call the

tion.
Salzmann, an Ashkenazic
Jew, started work on this project
in 1984, when he was invited to
go to Turkey on behalf of Beth
Hatefutsoth Museum in Tel
Aviv to undertake the photo-
graphic documentation of extant
synagogues and Jewish
cemeteries throughout the coun-
try.
The survey of monuments led
to interest in the living com-
munities of Sephardic Jews
whose ancestry is traced back
500 years, when they were ex-
pelled from Spain during the
Inquisition in 1492.
The 22,000 contemporary
Turkish Jews speak Ladino, or
an archaic form of Spanish
mixed with Turkish, and Greek
and Hebrew words — called
Judeao-Espagnol.
