Samuel Cohen

Samuel Cohen, recently retired
associate director of Detroit's
Jewish Welfare Federation ,has
contributed his extensive
classical record collection, num-
bering some 3,500 items, to Bar-
Ilan University's Department of
Musicology, announced Donald
Fox and Paul Zlotoff, Bar-Ilan's
1985 Detroit chairmen.
Cohen first served Detroit's
Federation during the 1950s in
the Allied Jewish Campaign's
Mercantile Division and in
budgeting and planning, before
taking a post as assistant director
of the Greater Miami Jewish Fed-
eration. He returned to the De-
troit Federaton in 1964, with re-
sponsibility for agency adminis-
tration, budgeting and planning
and community relations.
Prior to joining Federation,
Cohen was executive director of
the Springfield, Mass., federation.
He is a native of Baltimore and
holds a master's degree in social
work from Ohio State University.
Bar-Ilan's Department of
Musicology, Israel's largest, was
established and is still chaired by
Dr. Batya Churgin, daughter of
Dr. Pinchas Churgin, the Univer-
sity's founder. The department,
which includes some 230 under-
graduate and graduate students
and a staff of 28, specializes in
Beethoven and in Jewish music,
including the gathering of canto-
rial music and traditions from the
various Jewish communities.
The department also features,
in conjunction with the depart-
ment of psychology, a music
therapy program.
