else's culture, religion and lifes-
tyles led to a growing pluralism
of experience and values.
Decades of prosperity led to
increased individualism, sec-
ularization, hedonism and self-
assertion. A great rise in higher
education also developed more
sophisticated, more secular and
more tolerant elites. It all came
together and American became
truly pluralist. In a remarkable
display of mentschlichkeit and
decency, the majority American
culture voluntarily gave up its
monopoly and invited Jews in
for full, truly equal citizenship.
This pluralism was unparalleled
in diaspora history and possibly
in human civilization. Jews
would have to be out of their
minds not to guard this
achievement fiercely.
One response to the new situ-
ation has been the growth of
conservatism and the religious
right-wing groups and the ap-
pearance of such phenomena as
the Moral Majority. These de-
velopments have alarmed many
Jews. Jews have remained
highly visible leaders of the
fight for pure separation of
church and state.
Separation of church and state
is not an ultimate end in itself.
Jews should support it as the
best framework for civil dis-
course and religious creativity
in all the groups. But a total de-
cline in religion is not good,
either. As Milton Himmelfarb
argued; What profit is there for
Jews if the separation doctrine
succeeds in keeping the Ten
Commandments from being
posted at a public school?
Parochial schools are an impor-
tabt source of pluralist values in
a society which could become
monolithically secular.
I am disturbed that the televi-
sion networks and other media
are so favorable to all "outsid-
ers" — including, by a `halo' ef-
fect, terrorists. It is good that
Moral Majority criticizes them
and makes them more self-
conscious and sensitive to the
need to include right and con-

servative concerns. Better that
influence than government in-
tervention or other forms of cen-
sorship. Intimidation by the
right wing is bad, but a coun-
terbalancing influence for the
right is healthy. The consensual
Jewish model should stress not
separation for its own sake but
rather a balance of power, reli-
gious and political, which is the
safest condition for Jews and all
other living peoples. It was bad
for the Jews when Christianity
dominated culture and political
life. It is equally bad for Jews in
the Soviet Union where a sec-
ularist philosophy totally domi-
nates the national life: Breaking
up and disributing power is the
Jewish goal — sometimes that
means that religion should be
strengthened against secularist
excesses even as at other times
it means that secular positions
or pluralist freedoms must be
upheld against religious aggres-
sion. Of course, separation of
church and state remains a
bulwark of democracy and
Jewish rights, but it is not an
absolute.
Jews could — and should —
find some common ground with
the right-wing groups in return
for their resocializing to true
pluralism. Jews can work to find
ways of funding government aid
for parochial schools (with as-
surances of teaching with
genuine respect for all) in a
joint search for precisely defined
constitutional ways to check
pornography (a cowbird which
illegitimately deposits its eggs
in the nest of freedom of
speech), for common alliance to
strengthen family life and val-
ues.
Ob.viously, some Jews will
prefer to push the "traditional"
liberal agenda. But traditional
and other Jews who are more
flexible in the above areas
should be encouraged to follow
these openings. Jews should
have connections to all candi-
dates of the right as well as the
left.
