Wine's new book will undoubtedly be the cause of much debate between tradi- tional Jews and Jews who seek to pursue their identity through non-traditional (non-religious, secular?) means. Whatever one's approach to Judaism Beyond God subtitled a Radical New Way to Be Jewish, it will be a learning experience, whether one agrees with the contents or not. Rabbi Wine, founder of Humanistic Judaism and the first humanist Jewish congrega- tion, the Birmingham Temple, confronts issues and events faced daily by contemporary Jews: Jewish identity, Jewish H.P. history, anti-Semitism, the holi- days, rites of passage, Israel, in- termarriage and conversion. He takes a hard-hitting straight-from-the-hip approach, stating his case without apologies. To support his theses, the well-read Wine alludes to Biblical and historical per- sonalities. Nit- zan Mendelson, 23, of Kibbutz Hulata in Galilee was shot in the head and her condition was re- ported critical Monday. Her companion, Tamar Artzi, 24, of Kibbutz Revivim in the Negev, was reported in stable condition with a stomach wound. Their families flew to Valetta, the Maltese capital Monday. They were accompanied by an Israeli surgeon, Dr. Mordechai Shalit of Hadassah Hospital. The Egyptian airliner was seized by hijackers shortly after it left Athens Saturday night for Cairo and was forced to land at Valetta where the hijackers de- manded fuel and food. Of the 80 passngers and crew of 14 nationalities, 60 died, either shot by the hijackers or killed when Egyptian commandos stormed the aircraft at Valetta airport Sun- day. a subscription to THE JEWISH NEWS 20300 Civic Center Dr., Suite 240 Southfield, Mich. 48076-4138 NUSRALAS Name Brand Shoes I ORDER TODAY Pleas'e send gift subscription to: NAME ADDRESS CITY Hunters Square Orchard Lake Rd. & 14 Mile while (even if the Torah never existed).
