Group Would Investigate
Collaboration With Nazis
Washington (JTA) — A bill has
been introduced in Congress to es-
tablish a special commission that
would investigate American as-
sistance to Nazis and Nazi col-
laborators following World War
Introduced by Rep. Barney
Frank (D-MA) at a press confer-
ence Friday, the bill charges the
proposed commission with finding
out how many Nazi war criminals
or collaborators came to this coun-
try after the war with the knowl-
edge or help of U.S. officials, and
the extent to which the officials
were aware of the Nazi back-
grounds the new immigrants
brought with them.
It would also investigate the
nature and extent of deception
and law breaking said to have
been committed by U.S. intelli-
gence agency officials in an effort
to bring former Nazis and col-
laborators to this country, and
more recently, in an alleged at-
tempt to cover up the entire affair.
In Canada, former Supreme
Court Justice Jules Deschenes
announced last week that he is
sending two of his deputies to the
Soviet Union, and possibly other
Eastern European countries to
seek evidence related to the cases
of eight Canadians of Ukrainian
origin suspected of war crimes
while in the service of the Nazis
during World War II.
Deschenes was appointed by
the government of Prime Minister
Brian Mulroney earlier this year
to serve as a one-man commission
to investigate suspected Nazi war
criminals who found haven in
Canada after the war. He has
been sifting evidence and con-
ducting hearings on the matter
for several months.
The two deputies, Michael
Meighen and Yves Fortiers, will
collect evidence which Deschenes
will weigh before submitting his
report to the government at the
end of December. They will have
access to wartime German as well
as Soviet documents related to the
cases under investigation and will
visit other Communist bloc coun-
tries if necessary. They may also
speak to eyewitnesses.
