interviews and conversations. In
life, as in his novels, women are
the ones, he finds, who keep the
traditions alive and tell the old
family stories.
Much of his factual research
is used as background for his
novels. The idea for The Auer-
bach Will, his immensely popu-
lar Jewish family saga, came
from family secrets he stumbled
on while researching Our
Crowd. He found a member of
the Lewisohn family "stricken
from the family tree" for reasons
he could never discover.
He likes to alternate the writ-
ing of novels and non-fiction,
• balancing his traveling research
with time spent "alone in my
room with my characters." Writ-
ing is not, he says, a lonely oc-
cupation. "What is lonely is
when the book is done; when
you're left to wonder 'Where
have all those people gone who
were here in my house?"
Home for Birmingham is a
newly-renovated, inner-city
house in Cincinnati, where he
moved originally to spend a year
as writer-in-residence at the
university. "It was a lot of fun
working with the students, but I
hated the academic life — the
fighting for tenure, the publish
or perish." It didn't put him off
the city itself, where he finds
the "much more civilized and
private" lifestyle away from the
gossip columnists and social
demands of New York, very
agreeable.
Working on the house and its
small, city garden has become
something of a hobby. "You get
one leak plugged up and sud-
denly there's a new one," which
seems a modest way to speak of
a house which has just been
written up in Architectural Di-
gest.
His next book, The LeBaron
Secret, will be published in
hard-cover by Little-Brown in
January. It is a novel in which
one of the characters is a Jewish
woman, married to a Catholic
and required to deny her Jewish
heritage.
"You know," muses Birming-
ham, "there is a theory that the
Irish are one of the lost tribes of
Israel . . ."
