In order to understand the Or-
thodox Jew, we have to talk a lit-
tle history and philosophy. The
Orthodox Jew — better the Torah
Jew — believes in Revelation.
God revealed Himself to the
Jewish people at Sinai. He spoke
the Ten Commandments to us and
then called to Moses to come up to
the top of Mount Sinai where
Moses abided for 40 days and
nights. In simplistic terms — yet
basically accurate — Moses be-
came a secretary and copied down
the Torah and dictated to him by
God. during this time, God
clarified for Moses the written To-
rah. Thus, Moses descended from
Sinai with the written Torah in
hand and the Oral Law (Mishna)
in his mind.
This fundamental" belief is the
raison d'etre of the Torah Jew. His
behavior, attitude, outlook is di-
rected by the Revelation. God is

Jewish public opinion (Oct. 25)
about Rabbi Meir Kahane is not
surprising. some 40 years ago a
comparable sentiment was had
about Menachem Begin, then
commander of the underground
Irgun. The common appellation
for him was "trouble maker."
When Irgun retalliated against
the British execution of two of its
members by killing two British
sergeants, a prominent local rabbi
exclaimed, with the proper ges-
ture, "chatanu, we have sinned."
This spiritual leader, an eloquent
spokesman for the community
and often in demand by non-
Jewish groups, exhibited the
ghetto Jewish stance of meeting -
misfortune that befalls us with a
krechtz, and yielding rather than
have the courage of that tight de-
tail, the Irgun — most of whom
were Ghetto Jewish youths.
Rabbi Kahane draws the logical
conclusion that if an aggregation
of Arab armies should again con-
verge on Israel, as they did thrice
before, though Egypt may keep
the uneasy peace, the Arabs who
are in Israel may well constitute a
fifth column.
