VIP TRUNK SHOW

MOVADO

going to their weddings and not
feeling strange at all."
Of course, he adds, That was
family."
In later years, Peters found
more family on the stage. But
he still carried within him a
personal hurricane, an emo-
tional storm that brewed chaos,
prompting one close observer —
Alvin Ailey, wh once employed
Peters — to call him "volatile,
strong-willed and restless."
"Volatile, strong-willed, rest-
less?" Peters ponders the adjec-
tives. "Yes, they are accurate. I
stand up for what I believe in."
No soft-shoe through life for
Peters. Though he put in four
years at the New York High
School of Performing Arts, Pet-
ers did not graduate. "I didn't
want to do schoolwork. I just
had so much energy and I get
bored so easily — still do."
Such was not the case at the
Bernice. Johnson Cultural Arts
Center in Queens, where Peters
— as well as fellow student Ben
Vereen — learned the sweeping
power of dance — and theater.
"Theater is never the same,"
he says. "There is always some-
thing new, different."
As there is in television,
where Peters has been dubbed
the "Balanchin of MTV" for his
music video work with Jackson,
Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.
He has also carved out a niche
with some spiffy 60-second
spiels for Dr. Pepper and Pepsi.
But for now, Peters is turning
his attention and talents to a
Philadelphia production of
Dreamgirls, the musical saga of
Supremes-like singers who
struggle for fame and fortune,
which he and Michael Bennett
have choreographed. Dreamgirls
is virtally an opera," he says.
And Michael Peters is riding
it — every high note.

Hassan-Peres
Talks Possible

Tel Aviv — The stage was set
this week for a possible meeting
between Israel's Prime Minister,
Shimon Peres, and King Hassan
II of Morocco. Should the two
schedule talks, it would be only
the second meeting between an
Arab leader and an Israeli head of
state and the first since Egyptian
President Anwar Sadat met with
then Prime Minister Menachem
Begin in 1977.
King Hassan, in a television
interview with French reporters
Monday, said Peres had asked to
meet with the Arab leader in his
capacity as chairman of the 21-
nation Arab League. The king
said he would receive the Israeli
leader if Peres had serious pro-
posals for peace in the Middle
East.
Meanwhile, an aid to Peres
quoted the Prime Minister as say-
ing this week that "there were ex-
changes of messages between the
king and myself and I will be
happy to meet with him."
