THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, November 29, 1985 We're going to help you look terrific. fee. 546-6200 Asked if he disagreed with President Reagan's advocacy of prayer in the schools, he replied "not necessarily." The former NATO commander said it de- pended on the "nature and cir- cumstances of the approach to it . . . I think an individual has a right to meditate in accordance with his own beliefs and I think that kind of thing is appropriate in our schools, but then again, we have to be very, very careful not to be dictating religious beliefs anymore than you have to be care- ful not to insist on the sublimation of relgious conviction." Haig was asked if he could see an easing of exit visa restrictions for Soviet Jews as a result of the Geneva summit. It was too early to determine, he replied. Audience response to the Haig remarks was favorable. Jake Feldman of Union Lake called Haig a friend to the Jewish people and a "gutsy leader. He never re- ceived the respect or credit due him. He's done more for our coun- try than has been acknowledged." Robert Burk of West Bloomfield thought the talk was "great. I felt he was speaking from his heart and talking as an American and not just to a Jewish crowd." Dr. Phillip Friedman of South- field said he felt his remarks, especially those favorable to Is- rael, were "consistent with what he's said over the years." Golden Torah Awards were presented at the dinner to Spencer Partrich and Mickey Shapiro "for their dedication to Torah educa- tion and to the Beth Yehudah Schools." A special gift of $10,0000 from the Ladies of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah was ac- knowledged from the dais. A spe- cial presentation was made to David and Doreen Hermelin for hosting a parlor meeting to bene- fit the schools. According to Rabbi Norman Kahn, administrator of the schools, the dinner was the largest in the schools' history. U.S. Still Pushing Talks Between Israel, Jordan Jerusalem (JTA) -- Assistant Secretary of State Richard Mur- phy will make yet another eff icilt to get Israel and Jordan to the negotiating table, under interna- tional auspices. Murphy met with both Premier Shimon Peres and Vice Premier Yitzhak Shamir in Jerusalem Friday. In a luncheon at the resi- dence of Peres, Murphy gave him a detailed account of the Geneva summit. He said that in the talks, the U.S. supported the Israeli view that peace negotiations ac- companied by some form of inter- national participation cannot be a substitute for direct negotiations. Murphy said the Soviet view was that Israeli-Jordanian Pales- tinian negotiations can take place only in the framework of an inter- national conference, such as the Geneva conference. In the meeting with Shamir, Shamir expressed disappoint- ment that the summit did not deal with the plight of Soviet Jewry. Shamir also informed Murphy that the Taba talks with Egypt scheduled to be held in ten days in Cairo will not be opened unless Egypt concludes the investigation into the Ras Burka massacre, and the families of the victims are compensated. In a related development, Yoseph Yaakov, Israel's Consul General in Washington, said that while there has been some "fluid- ity" in the Middle East peace process, it has become stalled be- cause of Jordan's unwillingness to engage in direct negotiations with Israel. "If you negotiate with Israel, you are in effect recognizing Is- rael; that's what the Jordanians have meticulously avoided doing and still avoid doing," he told some 600 women attending the biennial Joint Program Institute of the National Council of Jewish Women at the J.W. Marriott Hotel. Yaakov said that when the late Egyptian President Answar Sadat came to Jerusalem and agreed to negotiate with Israel, this "was not merely an ending of a state of war, it was the open ac- knowledgement of the legitimacy of Israel and the right to exist as an equal sovereign nation." Noting that King Hussein of Jordan has said the time is grow- ing short, Yaakov said Hussein should take the next step and realize that "now is the time to sit across the table and talk to Israel. If you can't do that, then don't blame the Jews for not wanting peace." Yaakov stressed that Israel will never accept the Palestine Liberaton Organization as a negotiating partner not only be- cause the PLO is committed to terrorism and the destruction of the Jewish state, but also because it is not "the true representative of the Palestinians." With the Palestinians "we'll make peace if they join the Jordanians in an act of good will and sincere negotia- tions," he said. Meanwhile, Likud Cabinet Minister Moshe Arens warned that Peres cannot agree to an in- ternational conference for Middle East peace talks as long as Likud is opposed. 1:ercheval, in 1he Pillage Grosse Poinle g84-0701 LEVIN BEAUTY DAVID ROSENMAN'S _ A _ ALL AT DEEP DISCOUNT PRICES 1111110 Adma PIN/CHASERS Open 7 Days West Bloomfield Plaza 851-7323 Orciard Wm It S. if Maps Ogee Daily 9 to 6 Sm. 11 to 5 Caslidge at 10 Mile Opt Daily 9 to 6 , THE , MA N Certified by the National Automotive Institute of Excellence Comes to your home or office with the garage-on-wheels Valet service that doesn't cost one penny extra • Expert diagnostic tune-up • Electronic analyzer - all engine systems • Professionally trained mechanics • Perfect results assured Expanded Services Call Sanford Rosenberg for your car problems rr- ell ts..111111 ■ 111 .10, =398-3605 ■ 411111 VERTICAL BLINDS For 411 Windows & Doorwalls! to 0% OFF! In an interview with The Jewish News, Haig was asked about several issues. On church- state separation, Haig stated: "I think it's a very clear aspect of the American democratic sys- tem as foreseen by our forefathers and the drafters of our Constiu- tion.
