Dr. Rick DeRoven
Dean Cohen
All Dr. Rick DeRoven could
think of during the last ten
miles of the grueling Bud Light
Ironman Triathlon World
Championship in Kona, Hawaii,
last month was pizza.
"I was starving," the slim
Farmington Hills dentist said. "I
wanted pizza. I couldn't find
pizza, so I ate four Whoppers."
DeRoven and Grand Rapids
college student and triathlon
veteran Dean Cohen partici-
pated in a sports contest to end
all sports contests, where 1,200
persons compete against each
other in a course of events that
includes a 2.4 mile swim in the
Pacific Ocean, a 112-mile bike
ride and 26.2-mile run.
All of which must be com-
pleted within 17 hours, the con-
test rules dictate. DeRoven said
he beat his predicted time by 45
minutes. Coming in in about the
600s, he did the maneuvers in
13:15. Cohen, who for most of
the route was in 90th place, fell
to 224th, still a good showing,
finishing in 11:16.
Cohen said he hopes to go
back next year for the competi-
tion. "I'd like to do it in under
101/2 hours," he said.
Dr. DeRoven had had enough.
"Well, it's a once-in-a-lifetime
thing. No way in the world
could I ever do as well as I did."
However, he didn't totally reject
the idea of doing it all over
again. "If I get the opportunity,
I may do it again."
Both said the course met their
expectations. DeRoven was
grateful for the overcast skies,
which kept the heat down "tre-
mendously." Cohen was grateful
for the aid stations.
Cohen told The Jewish News
he was still sore when inter-
viewed about a week after the
race. DeRoven said he felt "tre-
mendous." "I felt the best I've
ever felt in my life."
Nothing really unusual hap-
pened to the two Michiganians.
Cohen's clothes and bike were
lost in Chicago for about a day
and a half. DeRoven tried to get
on TV, and managed to run be-
hind a TV camera crew inter-
viewing someone else. But, he
had no luck in being inter-
viewed himself.
And how would they evaluate
the race? "I felt good all the
way," DeRoven said. "It was so
much fun." Cohen agreed. "It
was a high quality race and
fun."
For what monumental award
did they exert their very bodies
and essences to the max?
All for the glory of saying "I
did it" and wearing an Ironman
T-shirt.
Fun is what you make it.
