SiXia2MMWM . M..XM. 5.5WAR5WRiVAMM3IMMat ,
that this attitude was a mis-
take" made by the Israeli gov-
ernment after the Six Day War
in 1967.
Speaking in a deep, guttural
voice reminiscent of Henry Kis-
singer's, Rabin asserted that if
Jordan ends its demands that
"declared members" of the PLO
can be included in peace negoti-
ations, Israel would not object to
an "international umbrella" for
direct negotiations with Jordan.
However, he said that in
negotiations with Jordan, the
Israel-Egypt pattern, where
every inch of territory acquired
in the 1967 war was returned,
will not • be followed. But to
achieve peace "without giving
anything is an illusion," he said.
Rabin noted that the current
unity government in Israel is
not "a marriage of love," but he
defended its accomplishments,
asserting that without it Israel
would not have been able to get
its soldiers out of Lebanon and
make progress on its economic
troubles. "After a year," he said,
speaking of the economy, "we
can see a small light at the end
of a very long tunnel." As for
Lebanon, he said he is proud, as
Defense Minister, "to put an end
to our involvement there. Who-
ever sets his foot in the
Lebanese mud sinks there."

"Most Jewish institutions,"
charged John Ruskay, vice
chancellor of the Jewish
Theological Seminary and
former director of education for
New York's 92nd Street YMHA,
"communicate hostility and fear
toward the general culture,
while the people embrace it."
In a forum on "Creativity and
Continuity," Ruskay offered the
92nd Street Y as a model for
Jewish institutions which, he
said, must "combine the sense of
involvement with the sense of
scholarship." The Y defines its
mission as combining and
enriching, bridging the gap be-
tween Jewish and broader cul-
tural concerns. He pointed out
that the Y combines broad con-
cerns with specific Jewish
thought.
Jewish cultural institutions,
said Ruskay, might focus on
