The adult study commission of
,Adat Shalom Synagogue an-
nounces that Rabbi Jules Har-
low, editor and translator of the
new Conservative Machzor and
Siddur, will speak at the
synagogue on Dec. 5 at 8 p.m.
The talk is open to the public at
no charge. Rabbi Harlow will
-addreis the topic "What Do We
Do While Waiting for the Mes-
siah?"
A native of Iowa, Rabbi Har-
low was ordained at the Jewish
Theological Seminary in 1959,
and since then has served on the
exeutive staff of the Rabbinical
rrbelny
Ascseum
he is director of
publications for the Assembly,
specializing as editor, translator
and compiler of liturgy.
His Machzor for Rosh
Hashana and Yom Kippur, pub-
lished in 1972, is widely used in
the Conservative movement.
He is editor and translator of
the new Siddur for Shabbat,
Festivals and Weekdays (Siddur
Sim Shalom), published by the
Rabbinical Assembly and the
United Synagogue of America.
He was on the Committee
which produced a new edition of
\ the Weekday Prayer Book, the
• Selichot Service, and a new
\ Haggadah, The Feast of Free-
• dom. Rabbi Harlow is also
\ / editor of Yearnings and Yearn-
ings II, supplemental prayers for
the hotthe of mourning.
He has served as professor-
/- in-residence at Camp Ramah in
New England and Canada, and
has edited a number of
textbooks for children.
Rabbi Harlow's translations of
modern Hebrew literature, espe-
cially the stories of S. Y. Agnon,
have appeared in Commentary,
Midstream, and Conservative
Judaism' magazines. In 1976,
his interview of Isaac Bashevis
Singer for NBC-TV was nomi-
• nated for outstanding achieve-
ment in religious programming.
He is author and narrator of a
film, The Life Cycle of a Jew,
co-sponsored by the
Catholic Archdiocese of New
York and the B'nai B'rith
TI Anti-Defamation League. In
1984, he was awarded the de-
gree of Doctor of Divinity by 4-he
Jewish Theological Seminary.
Rabbi Harlow's appearance is
