Into Potok
Chaim Potok has risen to the
highest ranks in literary
achievements. His several
novels stayed for years on the
best selling lists.
As a rabbi who never occupied
a pulpit he has nevertheless
been a preacher of unusual val-
ues in his writings, in his
treatment of issues as they af-
fect rabbinic students and
houses of worship with an em-
phasis on the ethical and con-
cern for the differing views that
make up a Jewish community.
His readers learn much about
the theological schools and their
students in this country, about
the Williamsburg area and the
Brooklynites who have influ-
enced much in the Potok works.
Dr. Potok and his novels lend
themselves to specific studies
and analyses in relation to the
author and the eminence he has
attained as well as the era he
portrays and the influence it
exerted. State University of
New York New York Press pro-
vides the means for such a study
in The World World of Chaim
Potok, the newest volume in the
series Studies in American
Jewish Literature.
Every aspect of Potok is
covered in this volume by a
group of scholars and students
of modern literature.
Edited by Daniel Walden, of
the faculty of Pennsylvania
State University, the book fea-
tures eight authors who cover
the variety of subjects inter-
linked with the Chaim Potok
philosophy.
In addition to an essay
entitled "Chaim Potok: A Zwis-
chen Mensch in the Cultures by
editor Walden, the essayists in-
clude: Leslie Field, Joan
Bloymick, Lillian Kremer, San-
ford Pinsker, Joan Del Fattore,
Cynthia Fagerheim and Sanford
Marowitz.
The subjects covered include
the Potok genesis in literature,
his philosophic Jewish view-
points embracing all aspects of
Orthodoxy as well as the rebel-
lious in student ranks.
An appendix to the newest
volume in the series is an essay
tribute to another eminent
Jewish author. It is entitled
"Cynthia Ozik's 'Levitation':
Five Fictions," authored by
Linda Zatlin.

Entertaining as well as reve-
aling, les Hard to Be A Russian
Spy by Alexei Korotyukov
(Pocket Books) retains continu-
ing timeliness because of its ap-
parent realism in dealing with
the Russian experience.
The novel, a translation from
the Russian by Joseph Kiegel,
was written by a Soviet emigre.
It draws upon the humurous as
well as the serious, exposing the
tactics of the KGB, the Russian
secret police. The novel acquires
special significance because of
its portrayal of life in contem-
porary Russia.

Seiko blends the past and the future with grace and beauty in a
polished gold-tone wall clock that rings a decorative dark wood-

ring a double meaning. It's a beautiful combination of
contemporary and classic, and it's battery operated for cordless
convenience. Come see all our Seiko Quartz clocks today.
