London (JTA) — Former Is-
raeli Prime Minister Menachem
Begin, who has been living as a
recluse since his abrupt retire-
ment two years ago, is believed
to be suffering from an incura-
ble and progressive brain ill-
ness, known as Alzheimer's dis-
ease.
The condition, named after
the 19th Century German
physician who first identified it,
usually occurrs in middle age
and has no known treatment.
The suggestion that Begin is
suffering from it, current among
responsible medical circles, pro-
vides the first credible explana-
tion of why Israel's charismatic
leader, who revelled in politics,
suddenly and irrevocably with-
drew from the world at the age
of 70.
Until now his family and his
closest medical and political ad-
visers have kept the precise na-
ture of his condition a secret,
fostering speculation that he re-
tired in a mixture of despair
over the costly Israeli interven-
tion in Lebanon and the death
of his beloved wife Aliza in
1982.

Volcano Aid

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel will
send medical supplies and blan-
kets to volcano-stricken Colom-
bia. The relief effort is being
administered through a special
task force set up last week by
the Foreign Ministry in
Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, B'nai B'rith In-
ternatioonal has also initiated a
relief fund for volcano victims.
The organization has issued a
call for its lodges, units and
members to contribute to the re-
lief effort.
Contributions may be sent to
B'nai B'rith Community Volun-
teer Services, 1640 Rhode Island
Ave. N.W., Washington DC
20036. Checks should be made
out to B'nai B'rith International
and earmarked Colombia Vol-
cano Relief.
The American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee is ac-
cepting checks for Colombian re-
lief. Checks made payable to the
JDC, with the notation "Colom-
bia relief," can be sent via the
Jewish Welfare Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, 163 Madi-
