A UN spokesman said that the Secretary General wanted "to set the record straight" on the nature of the conference. The content of the letter was not immediately available. It was learned, however that a delegation of the Arab League met with the Secretary General Nov. 11 to complain that the Is- rael Mission had misused the conference to discuss issues which the conference was not meant to cover. According to the Arabs, Israel requested the use of UN facilities to discuss • the issue of th UN and Israel. But, the Arabs said, the conference was used to discuss the General As- sembly resolution of Nov. 10, 1975 equating Zionism with ra- cism. Netanyahu said he met with the Secretary General Nov. 11 and received no indication of any complaint. Meanwhile, a report from Moscow disclosed that the Soviet government newspaper, Izuestia, sharply attacked the holding of the conference of UN premises and attacked Ambassador Netanyahu and U.S. Ambas- sador to the UN Vernon Wal- ters, as well as two former .U.S. Ambassadors who participated in the conference. Izvestia charged that the con- ference "grossly revised the UN document" on Zionism. It reaf- firmed Soviet support for the Zionism-is-racism resolution and accused Israel of genocide against the Palestinian people. Gem Industry `In Trouble' Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's diamond industry, which antici- pated record Christmas season sales barely a month ago, is in trouble, according to Moshe Schitzer, president of the diamond bourse in Ramat Gam. A group of Japanese buyers visited the Ramat Gan exchange recently to place orders. Spirits soared. But the Japanese, at the last minute, withheld orders. Several buyers cancelled con- tracts already signed. The reason, according to Schnitzer is the wavering U.S. dollar, the currency Israeli diamond merchants trade in ex- clusively. Recently, the dollar declined about 15 percent against Japan's Yen. Japanese dealers who bought diamonds several months ago now find themselves with stocks worth 15 percent less.
