He was also a member of the school or- chestra. Shelly says her home always had a Jewish National Fund Blue Box. Her mother, Lillian Komer, contributed to the In- fants Service Group and Hadas- sah, while her father, Harry Komer, was a member of B'nai B'rith, the Masons, and was an active real estate entrepreneur who owned and managed the Berkley Theater in addition to other properties. "Shelly won the Fresh Air Society's Outstanding Personal- ity Award as an eight-year-old camper," informs Lillian Komer. Her daughter was also a cheer- leader at Mumford High School, - and received a special Detroit Police Department commenda- tion bestowed on area students for academic excellence and community service. Involvement with the Teen Democrats and later, the Young Democrats, in- troduced Shelly to some of the vicissitudes of American politics. But at college, she elected to pursue a degree in languages, believing the law school cur- riculum would be too tough. The couple met at a Univer- sity of Michigan freshman mixer. Diane Klein, current president of the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah, asked '- dormmate Shelly Komer if she wanted to meet a nice young man she knew. After what Shelly laughingly calls "an undramatic first meet- ing," their relationship blos- somed. Meanwhile, Larry an honors political science major, was selected to fulfill an intern- ship at the State Department in Washington, D.C. under the ; supervision of Secretary of State George Ball. His assignment was the Cyprus desk. "In 1963," recounts Shelly, "Cyprus and Turkey were war- ring." She says the experience was instrumental in opening Larry's eyes to peripheral prob- lems in the Middle East and de- veloping a great deal of political consciousness. That year, Larry also made a / visit to the Dachau concentra- tion camp, an experience he says affected him profoundly. "I remember him saying when he returned, ' "Mother, I think I finally understand some of what you and Dad are trying to ac- • complish," recalls Edythe Jac- kier. But several years would pass before either Shelly or Larry would emulate their parents' examples. Larry was a second-year Yale University law student when he \_. and Shelly married in 1965. Shelly taught French and Spanish in New Haven until her husband's graduation. They then moved to Wilmongton, Del. for one year, where Larry clerked for a federal district judge.
