The day of mourning replaced a traditional feast and pilgrim- age to Jerusalem celebrated by the community. The leaders of the community charge the Chief Rabbis reneged on an agreement reached in September to allow Ethiopian couples to marry without ritual immersion, a religious conver- sion rite. The compromise ended several weeks of protest demon- strations. The Ethiopians claim the immersion requirement is an insult that questions their authenticity as Jews. Sources on the Chief Rabbini- cal Council confirmed last week that the council was still insist- ing on immersion before any Ethiopian couple is permitted to marry. Television commercials, post- ers and educational materials are being used to warn against the dangers of bias and racism. Israeli celebrities are taking part in the campaign. Meanwhile, the ADL has per- suaded Catholic schools throughout Latin America to adopt a new approach to teach- ing about Jews and Judaism. The new curriculum focuses on the history of the Jews in the Diaspora, the Holocaust and the significance for Jews and Chris- tians of the establishment of the State of Israel, according to Rabbi Leon Klenicki, director of the ADL's interfaith depart- ment.
