"Ted" -Kennedy called on Arab nations to follow Israel's example by choosing peace over war and on Egypt to send its ambassador back to the Jewish state, particularly to Jerusalem. Speaking at the first Attor- neys Division dinner for Israel Bonds at Adat Shalom Synagogue on Sunday, the Massachusetts Democrat said "There is a profound choice to be made, whether the people of the Arab lands and the people of Is- rael will spend the next genera- tion as they have the last, wait- ing for their sons to be sunl- moned, waiting for the call of battle to be sounded or whether they will commit themselves to the cause of peace and brother- hood, justice and righteousness, for Israel, for the Middle East and for all humanity." "Israel has made its choice for peace and it is time for the Arab nations to do the same." He decried the Palestine Lib- eration Organization, calling it "not a fit partner for the peace process or any negotiations for peace." Kennedy added that it is time for King Hussein of Jordan to meet Israel head on in peace negotiations, and that if he brings Palestinians to the con- ference table, he should not bring "killers, kidnappers or members of a PLO sworn to de- stroy the State of Israel." Continuing, Kennedy said that Arab countries must de- nounce terrorism and announce a commitment to peace with Is- rael before they can receive any more weapons from the U.S. "What we need in that region is a peace policy, not an arms policy. What we do not need is more missiles and bombs aimed at Tel Aviv, Haifa and the Western Wall," he said. The senator called the repres- sion of Soviet Jews another form of terror. He said he will con- tinue his pledge to work on be- half of Soviet Jews. "Let this be one mission of humanity where Upon taking the podium, we shall never give up and never give in." Kennedy quipped about Ivan Bloch, Bonds national special events chairman: "I'm jealous of Ivan. He's chairman of the Presidents Club and I'm still trying to become a member." Kennedy was received warmly by the audience of about 500 persons representing various strata of the legal profession. Twice Kennedy's remarks were applauded enthusiastically. Dr. Robert Brateman of Southfield reacted positively to the Kennedy remarks. "Sen. Kennedy was quite clear in his support of the State of Israel. I was pleased to hear that he had such a fair grasp of the current situation in the Middle East." Attorney Sheldon Erlich of Bloomfield Hills also praised the senator. "We're very fortunate to have him as a friend of Israel. He's a great humanitarian." The Bond dinner was the oc- casion to honor Michigan's At- torney General Frank Kelley with Israel's Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Medal. Sen. Ken- nedy lauded the honoree by say- ing that Kelley "symbolizes ex- cellence in law and law enforcement. He richly deserves the Eleanor Roosevelt Award." Michigan Gov. James Blan- chard cited Kelley's interest in the securiy of Israel. "He's knowledgeable, sensitive and committed to the sovereignty of the State of Israel." Blanchard lauded the attorney general as "a great humanitarian and out standing public servant." Responding to the tribute paid him, Kelley pledged, "I will al- ways defend the integrity of the great state of Israel!' Nearly $2 million in Israel Bonds were purchased at the dinner. Outgoing General Chairman of Detroit's Israel Bond organization, D. Dan Kahn, told the audience that during the current calendar year $14 million in Israel Bonds had been purchased in Michi- gan. The state itself, he said, had invested $5 million. Kahn said that about one-third of all Israel Bonds are purchased by non-Jews.
