Mrs. Stollman, who has a standing luncheon appointment with Wednesday's honoree, called her friend "very shy if you can believe that. She really commands respect without working at it." It is her deeds which speak for her. Locally she gave a generous gift to the Holocaust Memorial Center which in tribute named its library the Morris and Emma Schaver Library-Archive for her and her late husband. In addition, she made a cash gift to the HMC and donated books and archival materials from her pri- vate collection. Added to her Wayne State Af- filiation is the Wayne State University Press. In 1954, she and her husband established the Morris and Emma Schaver Pub- lishing fund for Jewish Studies. The fund provides for the pub- lishing of books on Jewish themes, philosophy, economics and more. A recent study, she said, stated that WSU Press' publication of books on Jewish themes has inspired other uni- versity publishing ventures to do the same. Mrs. Schaver plays an active role in the committee that supervises the fund. Sometimes, despite failing eyesight, she pours over manuscripts and sits in on meetings to determine which books will be published under the fund's auspices. She is the recipient of many honors, including honorary de- grees from the Jewish Teachers Seminary and Hebrew Univer- sity. She also received the Torah of Learning Award and Scopus Award. Chairman of the Israel Bonds Women's Division from 1967 to 1970, she was honored by that organization with its first Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award. Today, she is a member of Israel Bonds Prime Ministers Club and Cen- tury Club for major purchasers. To continue to list her affilia- tions with educational projects, Israeli causes, Jewish causes and other humanitarian services would be at most embarrassing to her. She'll firmly insist that one defers from using the word "Philanthropy" in relation to her. "Just say she is a lady who does good deeds. But that's presumptuous. I'm not the one to judge whether they're good deeds or not. I try to do what I think is the right thing to do." Mrs. Schaver is relentless in her pursuit of doing something to benefit her fellow man. Asked what new projects are in the works, she said as her face brightene, "If you can tell me how to get and where I can get more money, I've got so many projects on my mind. "I can't make commitments without knowing if I can honor them. I have limitations. I try to do what I can." ❑ c/
