Mrs. Schaver divides her time
between Detroit and her beloved
Israel.

being Polish-born, he was pre-
vented from coming to this
country because of quotas,
which for Poland, had already
been filled. The Schavers sought
the help of editor Slomovitz.
Slomovitz maintained a close
relationship with then Sen. Ar-
thur H. Vandenberg, who was
recalled as having a friendship
for Jews, Zionism and pre-state
Israel. The editor contacted the
statesman, and in a book of
Slomovitz's writings, Purely
Commentary, he recalled how
the Senaotr intervened on be-
half of the little boy:
"Sen. Vandenberg promptly
introduced a bill to declare It-
zhak (Isaac) of French origin.
Congressman John D. Dingell
introduced a similar measure in
the House of Representatives.
Both bills were adopted by the
two house's of Congress and
were signed by President Tru-
man."
Mrs. Schaver's humanitarian
interests provide a lengthy list
of the causes that have bene-
fitted from her generosity.
Equally important as her son
and her music interests is her
devotion to Chabad Lubavitch,
which will benefit from the
Wednesday event.
Again, she traces her in-
volvement to her home where
her father, Jacob, was a devoted
Lubavitch Chasid. "My devotion
to Lubavitch came from my par-
ents' and my own convictions,"
she said. The Lubavitch connec-
tion goes back several genera-
tions on both sides of the family.
She lauded the activities of
Chabad Lubavitch, particularly
outreach to teenagers.
"Lubavitch reaches out to
young people to show them

(teens) the beauty that we (as
Jews) have to offer."
She said she feels Lubavitch
holds the key to the survivial of
Judaism. "I know that 1,000
years from now, 2,000 years
from now, Jews will be here.
You have to counteract other
things (assimilation, cults, in-
termarriage) by going down to
our roots," an agenda which
Lubavitch constantly and con-
sistently follows, she asserts.
In recognition of Chabad
Lubavitch endeavors, she helped
establish the Schaver-Lazaroff
Chabad Lubavitch Student Cen-
ter at the University of Michi-
gan and built the Chabad Voca-
tional Schools in Israel.
Of her two greatest accom-
plishments, she says that of
being born Jewish is the most
important. In fact, that is how
she wants people to remember
her, that she was a daughter of
her people."
"I felt very Jewish from the
moment I could think. I think it
was a privilege to have been
born Jewish."
She continued, "I'm not a
chauvinist, I really don' have
hate for anyone, but I'm very
Jewish. That's me, the real me.
It's a motivating force. Even in
my music, it (being Jewish) was
a motivating force."
As a result of these feelings,
she has gone full-speed ahead in
lending her energies or making
contributions to benefit man-
kind and Jews in general. Along
the way she had occasion to
meet many luminaries, among
them Golda Meir.
Mrs. Schaver made her first
trip to pre-state Israel in 1932,
and said she had met the late
