Answering
Farrakhan

I do not believe that the
American Jewish community is
sufficiently cognizant of the
grave danger that the vicious
detractor, Louis Farrakhan,
poses to our people, as touched
upon by Marc Tanenbaum in
your issue of Nov. 1. This black
enemy's aversion toward Jews
goes beyond insults and allega-
tions of patent untruths; it is
near-advocacy of violence
against us, in short, of pogroms
as sought by the Black Hun-
dreds of Czarist Russia.
Our defense in this free na-
tion against this pogromschik
ought to take two fornis: One,
resort to law. Two, if legal
methods fail, then train self-
defense corps, on the order of
the samooborona of the Russian
Jewish youth, a generation ago,
first initiated by Zeev
Jabotinsky in the city of Odessa,
offering armed resistance, if
need be, so as to shoo off
would-be attackers ...
Legal means are, of course,
preferable. It is believed that
the time has come to enact a
law that any one whose advo-
cacy, in speech or print is liable
to lead to genocide is guilty of a
criminal offense and should be
punished .accordingly. However,
it is possible that our brethren
from the American Civil Liber-
ties Union might find such law
to be repugnant to the Constitu-
tion as they did the injunction
to stop the Nazi march in
Skokie. I do not believe that our
only alternative then would be
to stay inside and pull down the
window blinds.

Archivist's -
Thank You

"Thank-you"
to
Philip
Slomovitz for giving the Temple
Beth El archives such a beauti-
ful and warm welcome (Oct. 18)

I think you should know that
Temple Israel also has estab-
lished ther own archives. When
we started our archives, as it is
today, we encouraged Judy
Kanter of Shaarey Zedek, and
also, Ruben Levine of Temple
Israel to start theirs. I felt that
if every congregation in Michi-
gan established its own arc-
hives, everything would fit to-
gether. Some of the congrega-
tion in the outlying areas of the
state are also finding a place for
achives.

Letters Asked
For Soviet Jews

Final preparations are under-
way for the upcoming summit
between President Reagan and
Soviet Premier Gorbachev. This
is the first summit between a
Soviet leader and an American
President in six years. As plans
are finalized, it is imperative to
let the President know where
we stand on the issues of fun-
damental human rights of our

brothers and sisters in the
Soviet Union.
During the past six years,
Soviet Jewish emigration has
continually dwindled and is now
at a trickle; only 896 Jews left
the Soviet Union in 1984 and
this year's record is not much
better. In addition, of those pre-
sently serving prison terms for
their desire to study their
Jewish culture and practice
their faith, 70 percent have been
arrested and convicted in the
last two years and 30 percent in
this calendar year ...
I urge you all to write
President Reagan in this regard
and make your views known to
him that Soviet Jewish emigra-
tion and human rights must
NOT be forgotten. The
President's address is: President
Ronald Reagan, The White
House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave-
nue N.W., Washington, DC
20500.
One may also phone the
White House public comment
line and let your views be heard
at (202) 456-7639. Please make
your voices heard.

Morey Schapira
National President,

Morris Branch
Is Applauded

The Ten Mile , Morris) branch
of the Jewish Center is improv-
ing with a lot of activities and it
is the nicest place for the
seniors to spend their leisure
time.
I enjoy going there. The entire
staff, office, kitchen, mainte-
nance and volunteers aT,e all
pleasant, courteous, and couldn't
treat you better if you were a
member of the best country club
... There are programs, lectures
and special events to please
everyone.
The nursery and staff treat
the children with love and affec-
tion, and the children enjoy
themselves.

Arabs Are Not
Seeking Peace

Shimon Peres' address before
the UN General Assembly was
succinct and yet comprehensive
and statesmanlike. But it im-
plied a gratuitous assumption
that all the Arabs, and Jordan
in particular, are prepared to
explore the possibilities of final
peace in the Middle East. Noth-
ing is further from the truth.
With their customary double-
dealing, and what they construe
to be political adroitness, to say
nothing of diplomatic, the Arabs
are seeking to cover up that all
of them are PLO-minded, even
Camp David beneficiary Egypt,
and the plank of the enemy's
charter calling for dissolution of
Israel is their common objective
