American Jews
Aid Mexico

New York — The American
and Mexican Jewish com-
munities have agreed to "work
together" in non-sectarian
earthquake relief and rehabili-
tation in Mexico City, according
to Dr. Saul B. Cohen, executive
vice president of the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Com-
mittee, the overseas relief arm
of the American Jewish commu-
nity.
Cohen recently returned from
a trip to Mexico City and meet-
ings with Jewish communal and
government officials in a fact-
finding mission to seek out
areas where JDC relief funds
could best be applied. He spoke
of a Jewish "hemispheric re-
sponse," noting that Jewish
communities of Latin America
are also responding to Mexico's
needs.
Cohen noted that the Mexican
Jewish community was "greatly
pleased" with the response of
their co-religionists from the
United States. The Mexican
Jewish Central Council itself
raised $1.25 million in a Kol
Nidre appeal over the Jewish
holidays.
He described the immediate
need in Mexico City as that of
finding housing for an estimated
50,000 homeless people and the
replacement of destroyed educa-
tional and medical facilities,
with the second need being em-
ployment for many thousands of
others whose places of work
were destroyed.
The JDC has received dona-
tions of over $400,000 in cash
and pledges for Mexico earth-
quake relief and it is continuing
to accept contributions. Checks
may be sent marked for Mexico

Tel Aviv (JTA) — There was
a 30-40 percent decline in the
number of Israelis travelling
abroad this year, the govern-
ment's Central Bureau of Statis-
tics announced.
It said that in July, August
and September, the number was
40 percent less than in the same
months last year.
In the first nine months of
this year, nearly 400,000 Is-
raelis left the country for visits
abroad, about a third less than
in the same period a year ago.
Much of the decline in out-going
tourism was due to the heavy
travel tax and tax on tickets
imposed by the Finance Minis-
try on travellers.
