nal responsibility for Arab resi-
dents in the West Bank who are
governed by Jordanian law. The
Amman government pays the
salaries of local Arab civil ser-
vants and school teachers — in
addition to the salaries they are
paid by Israel. Much of the ag-
ricultural produce grown in the
territory is marketed in Jordan
and elsewhere in the Arab
world.
In a related development,
seven Arab countries contrib-
uted $535,000 to UNRWA (UN
Relief and Works Agency for
Palestine Refugees in the Near
East) for the purpose of building
a new school in the West Bank.
UNRWA received the grant
from Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait,
Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and
the United Arab Emirates
through the Arab Gulf Program
for UN Development Organiza-
tions. This will be the third new
school in the West Band paid for
by the Arab gulf program.
Meanwhile, a public opinion
poll published by Haaretz shows
that 40.8 per cent of the public
thinks that in principle the
Palestinians should have a state
of their own, and 30 percent say
that that state should be on the
occupied West Bank and Gaza
Strip as long as the Palestinians

recognize Israel and cease all
hostile activity.
The poll was taken by the
Pori Public Opinion Research
Institute among 1,200 men and
women.

Street Named
For Wallenberg

Washington (JTA) — The Se-
nate approved legislation last
Thursday to name a street in
front of the soon-to-be built
United States Holocaust Memo-
rial Museum "Raoul Wallenberg
Place" in honor of the Swedish
diplomat who saved some 20,000
Jews in Hungary during World
War II.
The naming of the street was
in an amendment to the District
of Columbia appropriation bill
introduced by Sen. Carl Levin
(D-Mich.). The House took simi-
lar action earlier this year.

rael for students, young adults
and professionals Dec. 25
through Jan. 7.
