Dispute Splits
• UlA Factions

New York (JTA) — A conflict
is brewing in the United Israel
Appeal between representatives
of Zionist organizations and
representatives of community
fundraising organizations.
At issue, according to a re-
port, are "proposals made by
community representatives of
the UIA's board of directors to
radically change the composition
of its membership by substan-
tially increasing community re-
presentation while retaining the
same number of Zionist repre-
sentatives." This is being chal-
lenged by the Zionist represen-
tatives of the UIA's Board of
Trustees.
The Zionist trustees, who met
last week to discuss this pro-
posed change, asserted that any
attempt to change this ratio
"would create disunity and
would constitute a disrupting
influence in the historic
partnership between the Zionist
movement and the fund-raising
community in the U.S., which
have traditionally worked har-
moniously together in the tasks
of upbuilding Israel."

Vatican Urged
On Israel Ties

New York (JTA) — John Car-
dinal O'Connor, the head of the
- Archdiocese of New York, was
urged last night to press the
Vatican toward the establish-
ment of diplomatic recognition
of the State of Israel.
The appeal was made by
I\ Edgar Bronfman, president of
( the World Jewish Congress, at a
dinner presenting O'Connor
with the first Cardinal Bea In-
terfaith award of the anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith.
"Please convey to Rome the
importance to Jews everywhere
of normalizing relations between
the Vatican and Israel which is
the home for so much of Jewish
> culture and so many of the
world's Jews — so that all of us
— Jews and Cathlics alike may
work together for a better
\ world," Bronfman told the
• Catholic leader.

UAHC Seeks
Day Schools

N

Los Angeles (JTA) — In a
precedent-setting move, the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations (UAHC) has
endorsed the principle of Reform
Jewish day schools as a "valid
educational option."
By a 2-1 margin, delegates to
the UAHC's 58th biennial con-
vention earlier this month,
voted to develop curricula and
materials for full-time Reform
Jewish schools, and to prepare
training programs for teachers
and administrators.
The 3,000 delegates also voted
"to provide guidance and coun-
sel to those congregations and
communities that are consider-
ing the establishment of such
schools."
