affiliations with the Zionist,
civic, dovish movements.
Dr. Gabriel A. Sivan, himself
a well-known author and editor
with important roles in South
African and Israeli involve-
ments, edited Goldstein's
Perspectives and lent it the sig-
nificance it merits with his
skillful selection of topics and
the emphasis he gave to its con-
tents.
Consideration is given to the
notable services performed by
Dr. Goldstein as rabbi, as head
of the most important Jewish
movements. The record of his
Zionist leadership would have
been faulty if it did not contain
the Hebrew and Yiddish contri-
butions he made in his many
decades of activities. Therefore
the text of an important Yiddish
speech, an address of major im-
portance delivered in behalf of
Russian Jewry, in 1942, over a
leading radio station, is signific-
ant. Texts of his Hebrew ad-
dresses are among the very val-
uable to be remembered in the
rich life that marked top leader-
ship roles in this country and in
Israel.
While the newest of the
Goldstein volumes relating to
his numerous activities are the
echoes of a six-decade activism
as a Jew and as an American,
his record could have been ex-
panded by another decade. As a
teenager he had already dedi-
cated himself to the Zionist
cause, was associated with the
most prominent in the Zionist
youth and cultural sphere, and
he was a debater and a brilliant
student.
As valedictorian of his
graduating class in the Jewish
Theological Seminary, as rabbi
and the inspirer of congregants,
his public image commenced
early, and the record of his
active life is well outlined in the
texts selected by the able editor
of the new volume.
Therefore, whoever searches
for historical data about major
Jewish movements must go to
the Israel Goldstein archives for
information and factual data,
and the three latest Goldstein
volumes provide them.
Taking into account the six-
decade continuity of interests
and services represented in the
essays and sermons in Perspec-
tives, the reader will be left with
a sense of gratitude to Dr.
Goldstein for having provided
explanatory articles on the most
notable figures in Jewish his-
tory.
The Holocaust, Israel's rebirth
and first decades of sovereignty,
the early Zionist history and the
activism that included Dr.
Goldstein's national leadership
in the Zionist Organization on
the world and national fronts,
the Jewish National Fund of
America and the Keren
Kayemet aspects globally as
well as the Arbitration Court
and other functions he organized
— all combine for a great trib-
ute to a most important Jewish
personality. They combine to
make Perspectives a most valu-
able, historically compelling
book for Jews.
