seem to be little in common be-
tween Yaakov Amargi and Wis-
sam Abu.
Yaakov is 18. Wissam in nine.
Yaakov is an observant Jew.
Wissam is a Christian Arab.
Yaakov has spent the last
four years of his life as a resi-
dent student at Boys Town
Jerusalem. Wissam has spent
all nine years of his life as a
resident patient at Alyn Hospi-
tal for Disabled Children.
Yaakov walks. Wissam never
has.
Yet theirs is a big brother-
little brother friendship, solid as
Jerusalem stone, that grew out
of Yaakov's volunteer work at
Alyn Hospital. Despite carrying
a 10-hour-a-day program at
Boys Town's Dr. Joseph and
Rachel Ades Academic High
School during the past year, he
came to Alyn three nights every
week to talk, study and play
with its wheelchair-bound
patients.
Wissam, paralyzed since birth,
was shy at first in Yaakov's
presence — perhaps because the
Boys Town student, always
wearing a yarmulke, make kid-
dush for the Jewish children on
his Friday night
But Yaakov quickly broke
down Wissam's reserve. Soon he
was reading and doing puzzles
with him, showing him how to
operate a camera, writing let-
ters to his parents in Nazareth
and wheeling him around the
hospital grounds.
Wissam began to anticipate
Yaakov's visits like birthdays;
his arrivals at Alyn were always
greeted by squeals of joy from
the smiling nine-year-old.

Arab and I am a religious Jew

Jerusalem (ZINS) — The
World Zionist Organization re-
ported that in the last two years
60 percent of all American olim
who made aliyah to Israel had
no contacts prior to aliyah with
emissaries of the Aliyah De-
partment of the WZO.
Aliyah droptied to 2,770 from
North America in 1984, com-
pared to 3,664 in 1983. Aliyah
from Western Europe dropped
31 percent during the same
period, and 33 percent from
Argentina.

both human beings, and that's
all that really counts."
On the day of his graduation
in June, Yaakov was presented
with a set of religious books as
the first recipient of the Rachel
Ades Prize for outstanding so-
cial service work. Boys Town
principal Rabbi Shlomo Pollak
told the audience, "Yaakov
Amargi's kindness sets him
apart. His free hours are de-
voted to doing acts of kindness
and charity, especially at Alyn.
Hospital. With the little money
he has" — Yaakov's family is an
invalid and cannot work — "he
buys presnts to delight the Alyn
children and make them feel
wanted. He has brought light
and happiness into the lives of
those with whom -life has dealt
harshly."
When Yaakov visited Wissam
after the graduation, the Arab
boy expressed very much the
same thoughts. Not with words,
but with a hug.
