Council Opposes
Constitutional Move

The Jewish Community Coun-
cil of Metropolitan Detroit has
joined a state-wide coalition to
prevent the Michigan Legisla-
ture from passing a resolution
which calls for a national Con-
stitutional Convention.
According to the council, the
implementation of such a meas-
ure, ostensibly to balance the
federal budget, would foster
moves by a number of special
interest groups to advance their
particular agendas and would
result in the erosion of the civil
liberties which have long been
part of the fabric of the U.S.
Constitution.
Ratification by 34 states is
needed for a national convention
to be called. So far, 32 states
have adopted resolutions similar
to the one now before the
Michigan Legislature.
The council suggests con-
stituents contact their state
representatives concerning this
issue. For further information,
