Frankfurt Jews
Protest Play

Frankfurt (JTA) — The direc-
tor of a play denounced by the
Jewish community and some
political figures here as anti-
Semitic announced Sunday that
the show would go on this week
despite the disruption of its
premier performance Friday
evening by 30 Jewish protestors.
The play, Garbage, the City of
Death, was written by the late
film maker Rainer Werner
Fassbinder. Mr. Fassbinder
wrote the play in 1975, during
the time protests were taking
place over the high-rise de-
velopment of Frankfurt's West
End residential districts. The
Frankfurt shows are the first
public performances of the work.
In the play, a Jewish real es-
tate developer who heartlessly
exploits tenants has no name
and is referred to only as "The
Rich Jew." Before his death in
1982 at the age of 36, Mr.
Fassbinder rejected accusations
that it was anti-Semitic, and
maintained that the involve-
ment of Jews in real estate de-
velopment in the West End dis-
trict was a classic example of
their being exploited to do the
"dirty work" of non-Jews.
The director of the play,
Guenther Ruehle, insisted that
his dramatization had avoided
an anti-Semitic slant, adding
that the character called "The
Rich Jew" in the original
Fassbinder version was referred
to in the current production as
"A."
At a news conference prior to
the scheduled Friday evening
premier of the play, the chair-
man of the Jewish community,
Ignaz Bubis, said that it pre-
sents "The Rich Jew" as a sym-
bol and a stereotype. "Mr.
Fassbinder knowingly gives the
impression that Jews generally
behave like this."
