Staff Writer The number of Jewish mayors serving communities in south- eastern Michigan was halved Tuesday as one incumbent was returned to office while a second failed to gain re-election. In Oak Park, Charlotte Roths- tein, running unopposed, won a third term as mayor. But voters in Mt. Clemens chose Jeanne Nelson over incumbent Mayor Ada Eisenfeld in a close race. The only Jewish mayor in Macomb County received 1,411 votes to her opponent's 1,436. . Louis Demas and Arthur Frolich were re-elected to the Oak Park City Council and Jef- frey Mandel won a seat on the Mt. Clemens City Commission. Southfield Mayor Donald Fracassi withstood a challenge by Vicki Goldbaum, beating the two-term council member by a nearly 2-1 margin. Suzanne Goldstein, Steven Hurite, Bar- bara Talley and Sidney Lantz were elected to the Southfield City Council and Eli Robinson was chosen to fill a two-year unexpired term on the council. Southfield voters approved ballot proposals calling for the establishment of volunteer police and fire reserves and re- quiring city residence for peti- tion circulators. But they re- jected propositions seeking tax increases for police and fire pro- tection and higher salaries for fire fighters. In Farmington. Hills, A. Janette Dolan, Ben Maks, Terry Sever and JoAnn Soronen were elected to the city council. Vot- ers also passed four of the five propositions on the ballot. Ap- proved were measures to allow council members to assume office immediately following the election rather than on Jan. 1; to fill council vacancies in odd- year elections; to eliminate the city council primary election; and to change the dates for Board of Review meetings. A proposal to allow board and commission members to run for city council was turned down. Alton Bennett, Arnold Campbell and Richard Tupper were elected to the city council in Farmington. HERE ARE TWO MONEY SAVING EXAMPLES: A polished gold-tone circle, a brown lizard strap, a diamond at twelve. Simple? Simply perfect, around the clock. A softened oblong, brushed gold-tone bracelet, a diamond at twelve. Its elegance is apropos on into the smallest hours. In both designs, the beautiful balance of richness and restraint does justice to fine Seiko Quartz performance. The discussion was part of a program called "A Day of Social Concern," sponsored by the Rabbinical Assembly.
