Court Upholds
Extradition

New York (JTA) — A federal
appeals court in Cincinnati last
week ordered that alleged
former Nazi death camp guard
Ivan Demjanjuk be extradited to
Israel to stand trial for crimes
committed during the Holocaust.
It was not immediately clear
whether an appeal will be filed
with the Supreme Court.
The court's ruling affirmed a
lower court decision reached last
April by U.S. District Court
Judge Frank Batisti. Israel has
issued a former extradition re-
quest for Demjanjuk, though a
final decision on extradition
must be made by Secretary of
State George Shultz.
The 65-year-old retired auto-
mobile worker allegedly served
as a guard at the Treblinka con-
centration camp in Poland in
1942-43, according to charges
filed by the Justice Depart-
ment's Office of Special Investi-
gations,
In Paris last week, Klaus
Barbie's French lawyer said the
Nazi war criminal was danger-
ously sick and that the French
authorities are voluntarily de-
priving him of medical assis-
tance to prevent his trial from
taking place.
The lawyer, Jacues Verges,
charged in a local radio inter-
view broadcast in Lyon that the
prison authorities "are doing
their best to obtain either Bar-
bie's death or to bring him to a
point where he will be intellec-
tually unable to defend himself
and testify at his trial."
