2900 PEOPLE ... full
capacity of Ford Auditorium,
attended recent 52nd Annual
Balfour Celebration by Zionist
Organization of America, Met-
ropolitan Detroit District.
The musical presentation was
enhanced by 13-piece orchestra
of Mack Pitt, with Bernie Katz
at the piano ... It was Mack's
eighth consecutive year playing
the Balfour, and the
entertainers always extol high
praise for his backing ... Bernie
Katz at the piano is also touted
for his ability to accompany ner-
Whatever empty seats there
were ... had already been sold
... Balfour was a complete
sellout weeks ahead ... first
time this has happened ...
Quite a tribute that not too
many empty seats what with
deciding World Series game on
TV ... Either that or the lassies
have a lot of clout over their
sports-loving hubbies.
The show satisfied a lot of-
curiosity as to what Robert
Clary, TV star, did on stage ...
He sings ... although someone
who saw him before says Clary
dances, does comedy and im-
pressions also ... Sure wish he'd
have done these instead of com-
plete vocal.
Many folks have heard vio-
linist Florian Zaback before and
enjoy his strumming melodies
... Israeli singer Ruthi Navon
was only person to bring own
accompanist, and sang mostly in
Hebrew with a smattering of
English.
It was interesting, too ...
probably with the two shortest
performers Balfour has ever had
... Clary barely hits 5 feet if
that, and Navon isn't much tal-
ler ... Curiosity was also
clarified ... Clary is Jewish ...
was 17 in German concentration

camp.

Emotional event was Navon
singing song written by localites
Rose and Herzl Shur ...
"Jerusalem" ... and calling
them to the front for spotlight
attention.
Lillian Kaufman on stage not
realizing mike was up so high,
and almost heard at Cobo Hall

Lil's hubby, retired Judge
Ira Kaufman, so proud of her
great work ... especially for
Muscular Dystrophy Association

ZOA Financial Secretary
Norma Hudosh highly respected
and pleasant ... Sarah and
Buddy Manson looking younger
... Ida and Iry Rosenberg al-
ways fun to be with ... Jenny
Zeff wearing a smart-looking
man's tuxedo-like outfit with
long bow tie on collar ... Hobby
Meyer Zeff wonderful French
conversationalist with Clary ...
Great sign on back curtain of
stage, "Zionist Organization of
America. Guardians of the
Dream." ... "Mack Pitt on both
clarinet and electric mandolin
... Harry Nelson and his favo-
rite expression, "I'll call you."
As every year ... on to the
large clubroom at apartment
condo of Lil and Sid Silverman
for sumptuous after Balfour cel-
ebration.
GOOD EMPLOYEE DEPT.

... Arlene Gordon ... at
Southfield-Ten Mile locale of
Mai Kai Cleaners ... Pleasant,
courteous, efficient ... and al-
ways with a "Have a good day"
for customers as they leave.
CONGRATS ... to Ethel and
Sol Lakind ... on their 55th
anniversary.
18 HOLE indoor golf course

SHARON REED and Jim
McCachren, owners of Bloomie's
Face and Body skin care salon
in Orchard-12 Plaza, Orchard
Lake Rd., returned from quick
retreat at Jim's refurbished
1890 vintage caboose on his
farm outside of Chicago ...
Steve McQueen's last movie,
The Hunter, was filmed there
... Jim was a stuntman in the
movie, and McQueen stayed in
the caboose for six weeks while
movie-making ... Jim and Sha-
ron fly back and forth in Jim's
Cessna Cardinal ... Sharon
took flying lessons and says
she's still scared of flying.
MARK BELTZMAN, former
Detroiter now a member of
Chicago's noted Second City
