Nazi Cover-Up
In Canada?

_ . 4

Toronto (JTA) — The author
of a book about the only Nazi
war criminal extradited from
Canada has accused the Cana-
dian government of a "cover-up"
in the destruction of hundreds of
thousands of immigration files
containing evidence for possible
use in deportation proceedings
against Nazi war criminals.
Sol Littman, who wrote a
book about Albert Helmut
Rauca, made the charge that
Minister of State for immigra-
tion Walter McLean stated that
the file destruction was routine
and the files did not contain in-
formation that would have aided
the search for war criminals.
The destruction of the immi-
gration files came to light dur-
ing hearings of the Deschenes
Commission, which is conduct-
ing an inquiry into Nazi war
criminals living in Canada.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles,
the Simon Wiesenthal Center
has called upon both the West
German and French govern-
ments to act swiftly on reports
that infamous Nazi war crimi-
nal Alois Brunner is prepared to
give himself up for trial.
An article on Brunner pub-
lished in the West German
magazine, Bunte, claims that
Brunner is prepared to give
himself up as long as he has as-
surances that he will not land in
Israeli hands.
A deputy and chief aide to
Adolf Eichmann, Brunner was
responsible for deportations of a
least 128,500 Jews, and was
sentenced to death in absentia
in 1954 in France for crimes
against humanity. Brunner, who
lives under the name of George
Fischer in Damascus, is 73
years old.

Rome (JTA) — Pope John
Paul said in Rome last week
that "Anti-Semitism in its ugly
and sometimes violent manifes-
tations should be completely
wiped out." He made this state-
ment to a delegation from the
International Jewish Committee
on Intemligious . Consultations
(IJCIC) which was in Rome for
meetings with the Vatican
Secretariat on Catholic-Jewish
Relations in connection with the
20th anniversary of "Nostra
Aetate," the Vatican II Declara-
tion On the Jews.
The Pope, in his address, re-
ferred to a Vatican document,
"Notes on the Correct Way to
present the Jews and Judaism
in Preaching and Catechesis in
the Roman Catholic Chursh," is-
sued last June. The document
was critized by IJCIC at the
time as a "retrogression" from
Nostra Aetate primarily because
of its failure to acknowledge the
religious significance of the
State of Israel to the Jewish
people, and its superficial refer-
ence to the Holocaust.
