mother of a bar mitzvah "does a
strip tease."
Your reviewer calls the movie
"marvelous ... likable," etc.
My reaction to the movie and
the review can be put into one
syllable: ugh!

Are Criticized

May I express my vehement
disagreement with your re-
viewer's evaluation (Oct. 25) of
the film Joshua. I found it dis-
gusting and repulsive. I left the
theater feeling cheap, dirty and
indignant.
The ability to laugh at oneself
is admirable. Tolerating good
clean fun, even at one's own ex-
pense, is a measure of the confi-
dence and security a person has
in his own self worth. But it re-
quires only a modicum of in-
telligence to distinguish be-
tween being a good sport and
becoming the object of derision
and scorn.
When this becomes the case,
then self-respect dictates an
appropriate reaction. I have no
doubt that this would have been
the case had the subjects been
black instead of Jewish.
The priorities and the values
of a society can be judged by the
content and quality of its
humor. I shudder to think of the
conclusions which would be
drawn should we be judged at
some other time and place by
this film.
Outstanding among the rep-
rehensible characters portrayed
is the mother. The Jewish
mother has been villified fre-
quently in modern American
literature but never so viciously
as this woman who without
doubt is degenerate.
At the very least I might have
expected the response that this
is only a harmless, improbable
spoof. But alas, the reviewer
states "...it'll give you a little
feel for ... Canadian Jewish life
..." He actually believes it!
This film may have artistic
merit. Of that I am no judge.
But from the vantage point of a
person who is concerned not
only with the Jewish image but
of any group portrayed in this
powerful medium, the film is
deplorable. It can be enjoyed
only by a non-Jew who takes
pleasure in denigrating his
neighbor, or by a Jew who is
consumed with self-loathing.

Treatment Of
Kahane Scorned

The recent visit of Meir
Kahane, Member of Knesset,
demonstrated many sad things

about our community. First, the
joke that masquerades as our
leadership. Those who dabble in
community matters, and who
postulate and pontificate on Is-
raeli affairs are not credible
when they run from a Member
of Knesset whom they have not
met or listened to. Perhaps we
can understand their seeking
ecumenism with Christians and
Arabs even through intermar-
riage, but to run from fellow
Jews? Their explanation is to
avoid giving Kahane publicity.
But Kahane gets coverage re-
gardless of their efforts. Their
efforts are futile for the real
reason is their fear of his ideas
and their inability to rationally
counter them.
We see and hear their defa-
mations of Kahane. Where in
that is Am Ehad? To hold up a
Jew before the gentile commu-
nity to vilification gives glee to
the Jew-hater as he watches the
attempted crucifixion.
Second, the media which
treats us to mall interviews and
titillation of "agitation" rather
than a serious analysis of
Kahane's Jewish ideas. Of
course, unlike Kahane, his de-
tractors do not care about or see
the blood of Jewish children on
Jewish land, nor do they wonder
which Arab it will be that
slaughters Jews for his "peace-
ful coexistence."
Where are their public con-
demnations of assimilation, the
secular threat to the Jewish
state, and examination of the
concept of the Arab role in
building Zionism?
The leadership of our Jewish
community has revealed its true
nature. It has no answers to
Jewish survival and runs from
challenge. While it pleads with
the Arab for compromise, it
avoids and fears its own people.
At best, they are irrelevant. At
worst, they are leading us to
doom as they did in the
Holocaust.

Tedd Schneider, the reporter
of the Kahane story (Oct. 25)
asked the public the wrong
question instead of dealing with
the real issue.
Is Israel a democracy where
Arabs have a right to be the
majority and legally make Israel
into Palestine? Or is it a Jewish
state of Jews, for Jews, by Jews?
By avoiding these two very
important questions only puts
Jews in deeper trouble. So as
Jews, let's nbt care who likes or
doesn't like Rabbi Kahane. Let's
deal with the truth. Israel is a
Jewish state.
