ings and contacts, spokesmen. for
the groups are hesitant to dis-
cuss the meetings, but describe
them as cordial.
Lawrence characterizes De-
troit's Jewish community as
sensitive, "and there are lots of
reasons for this — and it is usu-
ally not misplaced. We just have
to try not to get too uptight
about things. I'm dealing with a
(Jewish) community that is ter-
ribly well-read on the subject (of
Israel and the Middle East). I'm
also dealing with a community
which does not have as much
knowledge."
"You have to ask the paper to
be fair and complete, and we
shouldn't have any excuses to be
otherwise."
Lawrence spoke two weeks
ago before an audience at the
Birmingham Temple, and he is
scheduled to speak tonight at
Temple Israel about his Middle
East trip. But he reiterates that
he is not an expert.
"The purpose of my trip was
to learn. I read eight books on
the area in the last couple of
months, but what you learn is
in exponential relationship to
seeing it for yourself." Travel-
ling companion Robert Sosnick
