A Little Respect

Continued from Page 4

I don't expect a citation or
woman-of-valor plaque. My price
is not far above rubies. But I
would enjoy occasional words of
encouragement and approval.
Just to show I'm not a complete
aberration. I view child nurtur-
ing as the toughest type of
endeavor, but the most gratify-
ing. I have few regrets.
However, I am not so naive as
to believe the extravagent
platitudes claiming that
motherhood enables one to
shape future citizens on diverse
levels of performance. I know
better. I don't warrant that
exalted or significant position in
the scheme of things. Illusions
left long ago.
Some time back, a university
psychologist, researching the
blanket syndrome, (children who
hang on to their blankets for se-
curity, an acknowledged life-
line) observed that in a strange
setting the child with the blan-
ket is just as secure as a child
accompanied by his mother.
"But it doesn't indicate a
blanket and mother mean the
same on the value scale," he
concluded with authority. "The
blanket could never take the
place of the mother."
From his mouth to God's ear.
That's good to know.

ing patental esteem, is frightful.
I don't like them to act as
though I have a borderline IQ.
A friend, a talented playwright,
once admitted that her children
"treat me like I'm not very
bright."
That makes two of us. And it's
not overly comforting. Moreover,
if I am so dumb, how did they
get so smart?
Nevertheless, despite the
put-downs, conflicts, lack of sen-
sitivity and out-right narcissism
— they can't belive I know the
meaning of the "word — I'll be
honest. Motherhood for me is
largely fulfilling. I couldn't per-
ceive of life without that la-
ment: "Mother, I can't find my
notebook. Where did YOU put
it?"
Maybe it's chronic masochism,
but my function as mother is
fairly rewarding. Exploitation
by the young is temporary,
transitory; their perversity, a
passing phenomenon. Part of the
affliction and affectation of
youth. All is to be forgiven. In
our cult, remember, the child is
king.
Motherhood has been my
lifelong concern. I grew up play-
ing with baby dolls until I was
ready for Dr. Spock. I try to do
the best I can in view of certain
absolutes: my genes and theirs.
