Dennis Greenwald was the first boy from Southfield to die in Vietnam. The local media picked up the story and ran with it. For a while, the Green- walds worked out their pain and anger in this limelight. They donated funds to outfit a room at the Southfield Library. An oil portrait of their son hangs in the quiet study room. With their surviving son and daughter, they created the land- scaped island memorial in front of the library. The Greenwalds started a Jewish War Veterans post in Dennis' name and Mrs. Green- wald was quite active in the Jewish War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary. She even initiated a Kool-Aid campaign, sending Kool-Aid overseas to soldiers "because Dennis had written how awful the water tasted." Today, almost 20 years later, the Greenwalds still hurt. "A Jewish parent never expects a child to go before him," Mrs. Greenwald says. "We always try to picture Dennis as he would be today. We go to the cemetery of- ten. We never miss his birthday. I've tried to block my mind to a lot of what happened, but the hurt is constant." he Jewish experience in Vietnam — no better, no worse — is just as per- sonally painful and as universally misun- derstood as the non-Jewish Vie- tnam experience. Today, almost 20 years after the first Ameri- can left for Vietnam, veterans are urged to come out of the shadows, to unburden and share their stories with an American public willing to finally offer them their long-awaited olive branch. ❑ T BRAND NEW CAVALIER Groups Plan Protest Of 1975 UN Resolution LU z 2 dr. cpe., front & rr. car- peted mats, rear wind. de- frost, 4 spd. manual, 'Ls., tint- ed glass, cloth bucket seats, AM radio 8.896 FINANCING AVAILABLE FROM $ 7020* BRAND NEW '86 NOVA S10 BLAZER 4 DR. At a press conference at the Israeli UN Mission last week, Binyamin Netanuyahu, Israeli Ambassador to the UN, said that the "target is to reverse this infamous resolution by the end of the decade." He charged that the United Nations has be- come an international crossroad "propagating anti-Semitism on a global scale as anti-Zionism." Kenneth Bialkin, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organ- izations, said the conference is a joint effort of the American Jewish community and the Is- rael UN mission. He said the conference will be co-chaired by Jeane Kirkpatrick, former U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) also a former U.S. Am- bassador of the UN; Netanyahu, and himself. Other speakers at the confer- ence will be Vernon Walters, the present American Ambas- sador to the UN; Rep. Jack Kemp (R-NY); Bayard Rustin, the black civil rights leader; and the Rev. Bejamin Nunes, former Costa Rican Ambassador to Is- rael and former Costa Rican Ambassador to the UN. More than 1,000 leaders from Jewish, Christian and civil and human rights organizations are ex- pected to attend the conference. Meanwhile, members of the Zionist Organization of Detroit have begun a petition drive cal- ling on the UN to rescind the controversial resolution.
